Default Calibrated Monitor Calibrated Correctly?

How do you know if a calibrated monitor has been calibrated correctly?

I have a Spyder 2 and have two totally different looking profiles. The first one used the ambient light meter and it said the light was really low but wanted me to use 5500K (or something like that). The second time I tried without the ambient meter and it said to use 6500k. Both profiles look completely different. How do I know which one is actually right? This is just really confusing to me.

I edit in the dark, and generally use D65 Gamma 2.2, but I have a daylight profile that I use that's 5500 and 2.2 for those times. Its easy to switch using the Profile Chooser program.

When you say daylight, do you mean actually outside or just with natural sunlight coming in the room?

Why do you use those two different settings? When I use the first profile I created (5500K), whether it's day or night, the screen still looks dramatically different than my other profile, and that's what I don't understand. Which one is right? Is the one wtih the pinker cast right or is the one with the bluer cast right? And is it really a color cast or does it just look that way compared to the other one?

I mean daylight streaming into the room. It was what the software recommended during those lighting conditions. Our eyes naturally adjust the white point, so during different editing conditions, the target temp will change.

One thing I forgot to mention, did you make sure you deleted Adobe Gamma from the startup programs?
