I am waiting on Vista SP1 the first of the year before I make the decision to "upgrade to XP" on my new laptop. If SP1 does not significantly improve I will go xp.

Great article LOL

Looks like it's a worthwhile exercise. Does Vista allow an in place upgrade to XP or do you need to format/reinstall?

I would think that a reformat is required as I think M$ doesn't allow retrofitting of older OS. Either way, you would have to delete the partition first as a precaution.

Vista runs sweet as a nut on my 3 yr old machine, not perfect but then what is, or ever will be? It has many 'under the hood' improvements including on-the-fly partition resizing and SMART monitoring built in, which will no doubt save my ass one day!

Waite a minute, my old operating system is XP, am I missing something or is there a new XP now out?

XP SP3 (the "new" XP) is 15-20% faster than Vista SP1 . . . LOL! LOL!

You can upgrade from XP to Vista though I would always recommend a fresh install.
We run 3 machines in our house and the one running Vista Ultimate hosts our Media Center that is 'extended' to our XBOX360 via wireless. VERY cool, and the system is rock stable since the first week of frustrations getting all the device drivers settled.

MrCrispy - I think the thread was more along the lines of 'upgrading' from Vista to XP .

As for MCE - I do like the slick integration Microsoft have done with the media center, but having used it for a while and got tired of the restrictions I moved on to a full Mythtv setup and really haven't looked back. It'll play or record anything I throw at it, is entirely free, is almost infinitely extensible and has completely removed the need for me to watch TV at any given time in this house. Well recommended!
