My dell pro cant keep up with my 12mb raw files anymore.
I need huge storage, tons of ram,and at a fairly affordable price. I do a lot of Photoshop graphic work and use Nikon nx,which is power hungry. I'm also afraid of vista, have the bugs been worked out yet? __________________

I'd say get the fastest hardware out there and then put XP on it. Read this:
http://photocamel.com/forum/blogs/jd...sus-vista.html Core 2 Duo e6850 or quad core 4 gigs of RAM 4 terabyte hard drives (2 for backup) Huge monitor - 24 or 27 inch No kidding. This you will love. |

From an efficiency and cost perspective, it doesn't make sense for someone invested in a Windows platform, with software and experience and existing data that needs to be migrated.
Personally, I tend to stick with Dells. I'd be looking at the Precision workstation series for what you're looking for. |

On a Mac you can also run Windows (XP or Vista), and Linux, side-by-side with the Mac operating system! Try that on a Wintel box! So you can keep using all your Windows software. Your investment in it is NOT wasted. D.Rodgers, you didn't skimp on your camera gear and accessories. You wanted the best. But now you're prepared to make do with second rate image processing? Imo not a wise decision. Macs – the Beemer Coupe of laptops – ain't cheap, but then you get what you pay for! Get 1 Mac, get a Windows and a Linux PC FREE... |

![]() If you're going to buy a Mac to run Wintel software...what's the point in owning a Mac? The only advantage I can see is geeks, someone willing to make the investment in migrating (but not cutting over) or developers. Or Mac owners stuck with old software wanting to run the latest PC stuff. ![]() Plus, you need to pay for that Windows OS on top of the $$ for the Mac. And Macs definitely aren't cheap. So tell me again where the efficiency is for someone who ISN'T going to use the Mac software?? |

I appreciate the info about Macs, but why does the poster assume that i have no knowledge of mac.
I also don't appreciate it when I'm being told to use mac because MS is skimping out? Hello I'm Ic3 certified, that means i spent a pile of money to get a degree in Windows office control management. Now wouldn't this be a conflict if I want to use a Mac? Besides I just threw out my Mac Ibook, dreadful machine and horrible to get it work with online software etc. Now back to my Question, can anyone recommend a good windows based operating system besides the one already mentioned. TIA! |

In that case, I did give you my "good" recommendation. It's just not what you wanted to hear. BTW, ask yourself why A LOT of graphic designers/artists and photographers use a mac? Did you know that "Photoshop" was in version 2 (and 3 years later) before it was released for use on a PC? Up until then, it was mac-only. But, I don't want to start a mac-pc war here. So, I'll bow out and let others give you their recommendations. For the record, I don't own a mac. Yet. |

Uh...yeah. In 1990, I'd have recommended a flippin first generation Amiga over a PC for any type of graphic editing. Version 2 came out 15 years ago. Quite a bit has changed in workstation technology since then.

I recently got a Dell XPS 710 with Dual-core processor and 4GB of RAM, etc.... I'm very pleased with it!
I did not and would not have VISTA. XP is faster than Vista, period. And the upcoming SP3 release for XP will be terrific! You need the fastest processor you can afford and at least 4GB of RAM......IMHO. The XPS 710 is a very LARGE system....I was lucky I had the room for it! |

Dave, I've had two Dell Precision machines at work and have been very satisfied with the reliability and performance of both. These are used as Crystal Enterprise/Business Objects, Oracle, SQL Server, and .Net Studio development environments, so the resources get hammered quite frequently. You really can't go wrong with this as a value choice.
My home machine is a custom box built by Alienware, and I have been extremely happy with it. It's a 3.4 GHz Intel dual core with 4GB ram, SATA drives and hardware RAID 1. I added 2x500 GB ES class mirrored drives from Seagate about 6 months ago, and have filled up about 30% of this storage. Alienware offers the choice between Vista and XP still. The machine comes completely loaded and burned in. No complaints here. It was a bit pricey, but represented a good compromise in quality hardware and performance against the Macs I was also looking at when I bought it almost two years ago. Its still a screamer, faster than anything else I've played with, even brand new hi perf. systems. This would be another option I'd recommend if you don't mind spending a bit more. |

They sure do. I think they were acquired by Dell recently. Alienware: High-Performance Systems - Notebooks, Desktop PCs, Workstations, Peripherals - just choose Canada in the droplist in the upper left
