I have a load of transparencies that I want to scan at a resolution at least close to representing their original "quality of look"... many are faded old early chromes from my grandfather shot in the 60s.
My question is how does megapixel density compare to dpi. I see what is advertised as 4000dpi scans and don't understand what that means how the two relate ![]() I'm an "LSU dad"...either in shock or mourning today .... please have pity if this is a dumba** question ![]() Thx for help ![]() Jeff i'm shooting them with a 3? mpx coolpix with a slide copying adaptor __________________

The DPI of 4000dpi is indeed 4000 dots per inch. So figure out the size of the transparency and compute the dots each way and come up with an equivalent MP size image. More than likely, the scan at 4000dpi will be a huge file. Plenty of pixels there to work with.
Sorry to hear about your LSU ties, but hey, you should be used to it. 2nd time it has happened this year. Could have been more, you know ![]() And you will get a new coach next year when Miles bolts for Michigan... |

Printers print by putting dots on paper at so many dots per inch. Scanners and digital cameras capture the image on pixels and their resolution is measured in pixels per inch. There is no direct correlation between the resolution of a scan (ppi) and the number of dots your printer will lay down when it prints from that scan.

No, 4000dpi means there is 4000 pixel samples in every inch of the scan. So if you scanned a 1" by 1" transparency, there would "only" be 16 million pixels...
Les will be there for at least one more game (SEC Championship). He might bail before the bowl game. If he was a nice man, he would so both schools can go forward...And LSU better talk to Bo Pellini now before Nebraska comes a calling (probably called him earlier today) |

So , bottom line film scans @ 4000dpi are going to have a lot more info than photographed copies at 3mp... I kinda screwed up and spent my "scanner" $ on a little Canon G9 which is making all Me Nikon lenses nervous
I'm going to sell the coolpix and some other toys to fund a scanner... (anyone need old Honda MC parts ' I thought LSU made an unconvincing #1 and I'm not surprised things are going the way they are... real shame is these coaches aren't coaching "Character" first. Miles has been pretty adamant about sticking it out...but so was Saban. At Least Louisiana has a hero in Monroe... oy.... ![]() ThX Jeff |

Film scans can be a good thing and there may be a ton of pixels in the huge files they will create if scanned at the maximum.
Make sure that the scanner is actually scanning at whatever amount in both directions too. Some scan at a certain resolution one way and a different one the other. You probably know that you can't just get any old scanner to scan transparency/negatives. You need one that is setup to do it... |

Granted the terms "dpi" and "ppi" are widely misused, thus contributing to the confusion; it would help if those who knew better would cease referring to scanner and digital camera resolution as "ppi".
