Is there an acceptable compression method for large photo-file backup strategies that is truly lossless?

Depends on what you mean by acceptable. I find that I can reduce by 50% RAW files using a lossless compression (winrar). JPEGs, on the other hand, don't compress nearly so well. If backing up then there are various compression strategies to choose from - it's all down to how much processing time compared to space saving that you wish to put up with. These days with very cheap mass storage it's not such a problem.

One still has to keep the backup drives connected for scheduled backups with Retrospect, so there is a limit that way. And largest drives might be dangerous, because if you lose one, you could lose a lot. So even they have to be backed up.

BTW, I am using a Mac.
