Quicklook Is just AWESOME! especially in Mail. I think one of the new features is speed. Everything seems faster.

Features 300, this is...

p.s. Core Image Funhouse is a neat app found with the developer tools.

At least EVERY flavor of Windows since at list 95 allows me to customize the fonts and font sizes of dialogs and menus and allows one a central location to change the background color of the active window.

So far Apple (Mac) OS X does not allow for that. We've been around and around with both Apple in CA and the local Apple store. Searched online forums and all available books with no solution in sight.

The fact that the Mac, out of the box, will not support Themes is one hindrance, Another is there is not a central location for this information to reside. Each application is responsible for its fonts, menus and active window colors. With a visually impaired user, this places an un-due burden on the user to find and change these settings *IF* the application allows it.

Finder for example. In the icon view the background color can be changed. The other views it cannot. So if the user desires to have a different background color and NOT be in icon view they are out of luck.

Hacks are generally out of the question for the user I am speaking of.

Sorry to RANT, its just I get tired of everyone bashing Windows when Apple is no better (and no worse) when it comes to customer satisfaction.

Wait for the bugs and security issues to be addressed. Following some of the news articles suggests Leopard is not as secure as Tiger out of the box. Settings that were set in Tiger are lost on the Leopard upgrade.

Aside from that, the people I know who have it like it well enough. If you upgrade BACKUP your data before doing the update.

$0

AVG and avast! are both free for home use.

Also, ALL computers should be running some form of virus protection. Just because it does not happen every day does not mean the Mac is any less a target.

I have had it since monday 29th of Octobre and it did not work with the uppgrade install. I had to shot down the compter and restart it with the c buttom pressed down. After that I did choose install and archive. After that I succeeded to install the product. I could not get the Toast 7,1,2 version to work. I lost the wacom table and have to reinstall it if I find the disk.

But after this I have only enjoyed.

Paul,

I cannot agrue about how well laid out OS X is. Or how stable it generally is. Yet when it comes to customizing the UI, from a central location, OS X falls flat for us.

My wife is legally blind but still has some vision. She desires to have a certain background color. In Windows this is pretty easy. In OS X it is virtually impossible. Not all applications behave consistently and some don't even allow the user the ability to change the background color of the active window.

For us there still is no perfect OS. Just a matter of trade-offs based on needs. That is why a PowerBook G4 is going to go on eBay and the PowerMac G5 may be heading that way soon. We're not happy about it. Its that we need to get the UI right for her.

Peace,

OS X is to me the perfect OS - no nags at all, everything logically laid out, fantastic range of software (unless you're a gamer), beautifully efficient. I do worry about the latest version seeming to go for much more Apple lock-in (e.g. the quickview feature, which is brilliant, but links to iPhoto and doesn't allow you to change that). But even so, being able to open a terminal and do lots of powerful stuff at the command line is great for me (as a UNIX person). Just that alone is reason enough to use it.
