Windows: right click My Computer, and select Properties. It'll be listed in the lower right, along with other details.

John, I think that will tell you how much RAM you have installed, but not what kind.

Oh crap, you're right. I generally refer to the original spec sheet, but if you have a major manufacturer machine, like a Dell, you can look it up on their support site, using your model/serial #. Also, you can use the tool at Memory upgrades, flash media, and usb storage at Crucial.com to find out.

what jfrancho said. I use that site at work. we get hand-me-down computers and I have to check them out. I find it easier to check the site instead of opening up the computer and poking around. That and Crucial.com also tells you what you can upgrade to.

Once you figure out what you have, and what you can upgrade to, I usually get it from Newegg. I know that sounds terrible, but that's economics for you.

If you don't know all your MB specs, it is best to just open the case and count your memory modules, open slots and pull your memory and see what size and speed memory you have. not knowing your system, some older systems used specialized memory such as ECC, some use dual channel. and some motherboards actually limit the total count of memory.
If you have a factory built system the sites listed above are great, Kingston use to have a memory calculator as well.
I just got 2GB of Corsair memory to add to my system from Newegg, it is a safe site to use and they usually have great shipping.
Before you put any memory in be sure to clean out the memory module slots and be sure not to touch the memory contacts. I always take them out, clean and re-seat them if I am doing any work on a system.

One of the first things I do when I buld a new PC is to load the free program "Everest". It will identify all your components even down to the serial numbers. It will also scan your motherboard and CPU fans and operating temperatures. Overheating is the most common cause for PC failure.
