Time to stick a DVD burner in my PC .The laptop is getting a work out.
The last burner I used was to fast (I think) had issues with data missing. What is a good burner (I'm cheap) and what should I look for in specs. __________________

I've gotten so lazy about brands I rarely check them when I pick something like this up. I'm not saying everything is perfectly matched across the lineup but quality is much better than it used to be.
Make a list of your desired formats (DVD-R, RW, +/-, Blu-ray, whatever) and match up your choices. Anything new today is going to be at the top speeds available. |

I agree - most are pretty good these days and cheap too. An internal should cost you about $40. Speeds are pushing 20X but you'll be hard pressed to find media that supports that speed.
Personally I've had Pioneer, NEC and LG - no problems with any. |

Good question. About a year ago I was forced to look into this issue as we could not burn "GOLD" CDs or DVDs with one of our burners. It turned out that one of the four different brands we had did not work. After significant research we found out from disc suppliers that NEC burners did not work with gold discs for some unknown, but well known reason. With that said, I can tell you that most burners are O.K. if you use good software, NERO or SONIC, being among the best. We are using PLEXTOR, TEAC and LG with good results and no particular preference. DELL sells their burners interchangeably, but stands behind them and a reasonable burner costs between $40 U.S. and $75 U.S.
