Default Laptop processor speeds

I'm going to be buying a new notebook and I'm having a problem making heads or tails out of the new speeds. My old Dell is a 2.4 ghz Pentium 4 and the new laptops I'm looking at are Pentium M with speeds at less than 2 ghz. I know that we can't be going backwards so what's the real speed on these new chips? What speed should I be looking at for heavy digital imaging and photoshop usage?

(I know there will be those that say go with Apple, but I'm not buying all new software so I'm staying with a Windows notebook.)

Thanks!
