I just ordered LR 1.0 from AMAZON. I am wondering if users of the BETA versions might share how they anticpate integrating LR with PHOTOSHOP. Specifically, will you do your RAW conversions in LR?

As a Lightroom beta tester and V1.0 user I can give you some comments.
I moved all my Raw processing into Lightroom, I also shoot tethered into Lightroom. PS is integrated with LR, you can also integrate a second pixel editor (Elements etc), when you are using LR you can make a "round trip" to PS or the second editor. It is quite seamless, what does happen is that you create a copy of the original file in a different format (not raw), that obviously uses disk space and means* that you are no longer working with (not on) the original file. The more I use LR, the less I have been making that "round trip". Some folk do have to use PS, some do not, I am lucky sit in the middle. What do you do? (Assume the second editor is PS Elements). Editing in Photoshop or Photoshop Elements You can perform additional editing with Photoshop or Photoshop Elements from within Lightroom. You must have either Photoshop or Photoshop Elements installed on your computer. In the Library module or Develop module, select the photos you want to edit, and choose Photo > Edit In Adobe Photoshop or Edit in Adobe Photoshop Elements. Then in the Edit Photo dialog box, select one of the following: Edit Original, Edit A Copy or Edit A Copy With Lightroom Adjustments. Edit Original* - Edits the original file without Lightroom adjustments. (JPEG, TIFF, and PSD only) Edit A Copy - Edits a copy of the original file without Lightroom adjustments. (JPEG, TIFF, and PSD only) Edit A Copy With Lightroom Adjustments - Edits a copy of the original file with Lightroom adjustments visible. Note : When you send a copy to the external editor, the newly created file is automatically added to the library. After making edits in Photoshop or Photoshop Elements, you will be prompted to save any changes to the photo sent from Lightroom. Note: do not do a "Save As" and rename the photo because the newly-created photo will not be automatically added to the library. Very important: When saving from Photoshop or Photoshop Elements, be sure to turn on the Maximize Compatibility option so that images can be read by Lightroom. Photoshop CS2 automatically saves PSD files from Lightroom with maximum compatibility. I hope that is clear* ![]() |

I wrote a couple of threads on Lightroom in the "Image Editing" section here. Sid appeared and has help with that too. Check in there for some discussion on it, and there is a nice thread about using Presets in the Develop module in there. Also some links to other stuff that can be added to make your Lightroom experience better.
I happen to like Lightroom. It seems to have lessened the use of PS for me. |

Sid:
Thanks: I am using Capture One and shoot tethered into C1, then I do any additional work in PS. So, it sounds like some of the file management issues that I have been using iView for can be handled with an all ADOBE solution. Thanks again for your insights. Jerry Reed |

The tethering into LR is done using the Canon software, so departing C1 may not be a cut and dried option. I would certainly suggest that anyone with an interest uses the trial version of LR.
I am also a registered user of iView MP 2 and 3, the change hasn't been bad, LR is still a V1.0 product so it will grow. I am happy that LR does DAM it is not all singing and dancing yet, IMO it still needs global folder watching like IVMP, but LR certainly does what I need it to. Of course if you need to manipulate or access the core database it is "open". Other questions? just ask. HTH |

I thought v1 of LR had a "global watch" folder? Maybe not.

I wasn't clear was I, this will not be clear either.
V1.0 has a watched (auto import) folder which was originally meant for tethered work. The Auto Import feature automatically imports photos into the Lightroom library by monitoring a watched folder for photos and then moving the photos into a managed folder in the library. The feature has many uses. For example, if your camera manufacturer’s software provides a tethered connection feature and can download the photos to a watched folder, Lightroom can monitor the folder and automatically import the photos as they’re being taken. Some people use the watched folder to drop files into, thus importing the images. A watched folder is usually empty. In IVMP if you "watch" a folder IVMP will update the library when new files arrive (does it all the time) but the files stay where they were placed. The difference is that once LR is watching a folder any files that arrive are moved into the library, not kept in place. __________________
