In the new year you can expect a new plugin in for IE or firefox, made by Polar Rose, from their site:

The web is increasingly becoming visually oriented, progressing from text to photos and other rich media. Close to 10 million new photos are uploaded on a daily basis, a number which is doubling every eight to ten months.

Photos tell many stories, but unlike text, the context of a photo is hard to search for unless explicitly "translated" by a human being. The photo web of today is like the text web before Altavista, Inktomi, and Google.

Polar Rose makes photos searchable by analyzing their content and recognizing the people in them.

Nice idea. I can see meta data becoming increasingly important (we can already see it with the various image management tools that are taking off). I can also see Google paying 1.8 billion dollars by the end of 2007 for the technology .

I'm not a horoscope kind of guy (a typical Sagittarius I believe...). I'll certainly keep an eye out for this technology though. I use a sound recognition software for working out meta tags for my iTunes collection (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IEatBrainz). It uses an acoustic fingerprint to match the songs. I can see image fingerprints being similarly useful. Imagine being able to scan your image collection and automatically picking out Auntie Doris or Uncle Fred. It has the potential to be a lot of fun when linked with other images on the Internet (when you find that Uncle Fred bears an uncanny resemblence to some dastardly figure from the past... ).
