Would like to setup/use FTP but have absolutely no clue how to do so. So do you know any source one can read to have a basic idea about it.
Also, is there such a thing as free FTP. I don't mind paying as long as it's 1- Secure 2- Easy to use. These requirements are really important since I'll be using the it with family and friends. Any advice will be highly appreciated. __________________

Thanks John, that was an informative link.
It seems, from the link, that one needs a server to upload the files to. I don't have one nor my isp will give me some space. So is there a way to "rent" a server/space. Thanks |

I've used Filezilla. It's relatively easy to learn, uses a GUI on both the server and client. Your family don't have to use the client, just provide the login and password to your server.

Thanks John,
Scanned through the site quickly and it seems there is a bit of a learning to use FTP. Honestly I thought it's a little easier to use the service. Thanks again. |

Thanks John. What a relief, the server thing made me worry.
Would 512 ADSL work, and would family/friends be able to send me files too or the server is used to send files from me only. Sorry for the stupid question. |

Sure can. I have many friends that have this setup to share their bootleg Pearl Jam/Phish/grateful Dead/Radiohead stuff over the internet. You just have to make sure you have your firewall properly setup and keep the security tight. I haven't personally set this up at home, but I have set up a server at work, and it was really easy. You could check out the PC tech forums (I have no idea which one is best - they're just too many of them) to get some help. I'd walk you through it, but It was a trial and error thing for me, and I don't really remember exactly what I did. But I do remember it was an hour and I was up and running.

Thanks,
Do you feel it's secure and easy to use by novices. You are a tech guy from what I understand. Btw, do you have Led Zeppelin to share (kidding, would never do such a thing). |

My server was behind the firewall at work. You'd have to do the research, but I beleive that Filezilla is secure. Sorry, no Led Zeppelin, though I still have some of the albums back from when I was a kid. Houses of the Holy is one of my favorite records.

open the port on your firewall.* set permissions to the ftp share.* start the ftp service(or app) on your computer.* tell your family and frieds the logon. a static ip would be nice to have at this point.

Thanks Richard.
Guys, what do you think of yousendit. PC Mag had a good (and small) review about it. Edit: Here is what PC Mag said: "By P.J. Jacobowitz What if we told you there's a Web site that lets you send a file as large as 1GB, anytime, anywhere? Wait, don't answer. What if we told you that you could send as many copies of the file as you like? Wait, don't answer. What if we told you that it's completely free? Sound too good to be true? Toss your flash drive and check out YouSendIt." |
