Exactly, I bet it is on their newer higher-end motherboards.

To be honest everyone. Thunderbolt is nice, but it is a bit of an overkill for photography right now. It is quite useful for video files which can be quite large.

I believe Apple and Intel are anticipating the market a bit. Look at the canon 300c cinema camera, and the soon to be 4k video cameras (4000 lines of resolution vs 1080 for Hd). Those are HUGE files that will require super fast transfer speeds.

Yeah it is worth it to upgrade to USB3.0, the speed is the same when the HDD is connected internally. I bought the PCIe USB3.0 card for only $11.50 (free shipping)

Here are AJA System Test results for Seagate 500GB HDD SATA 3/6.0Gbps (2 partitions) using the same docking system.

Something I just found out the hard way when trying to add more USB 3.0 ports to a windows computer that already has USB 3.0 on the motherboard is it is most likely the two USB 3.0 controllers will not get along with each other.

With two Renesas controllers the driver would not install to the 4 port card until the motherboard 2 port controller was disabled. With a card that had a different brand of controller chip both would run for a while, but the machine would BSOD when waking from sleep.

Fortunately I can buy these parts locally so returns only cost me a gallon of gasoline.

I recommend add on cards with the Renesas (or NEC) chip because they have been tested with more devices. Also, I believe this is the only one supported by OS X.

tot31 - now you need a SSD drive and see how much faster they are over the standard HDD. Too bad they are still pretty expensive for their capacity. I'm waiting until 1TB SSD drives are in the $250 area.

I have one of the new ASUS motherboards with the option for Thunderbolt but am waiting for a little more selection on the device end.

X.
In other words, it cost you a fortune?

Hadn't considered USB 3.0 until this discussion. I have a couple questions:
a) Will my other USB 2.0 ports still be functional?
b) Are there minimum computer requirements? (ie I'm running an Acer desktop with a 2.20 gigahertz AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core, XP Pro, 4g ram)
Thanks, JeffD
