Default Perpetual monitor calibration

I try, and i tweak, and i end up going back to defaults and starting over. I think i may invest in a colorimeter and software, but in the meantime, i'm curious. What do you all use for gamma and target white point settings (especially Mac users), and why?

PC user, but D65 Gamma 2.2 is the standard, unless your on a really old Mac. Personally, I target 5000K and 2.2, but I edit in the dark. I occasionally flip flop on those targets, though.

I have a profile for those settings, which is what i'm using now (as of the last 2 days.) But, i was using a higher/cooler white point, and lower contrast gamma, and found that my images posted here, when viewed on a PC, were really washed out. So, if i have increased my monitor's richness and contrast, it seems that it will just compound the problem. And print? Fahgedduboutit.

I've never had any color or contrast problems in Illustrator, and i've never touched the color settings. Photoshop colors are a never-ending nightmare. I'd like to start sending some work to a lab, but i have to nail this before i waste a lot of money and effort on lab prints.
