Default laptop

is the color on the new laptop screens reliably good for hoto work?
Any suggestions on what to look for? I won't be going Mac as there is too much invested.
I would like to use a laptop for when I am away from home.
Any thoughts or suggestions would be most helpful.
Thanks and best wishes.

Dirk: Thanks for the reply. I'm pretty amaturish when it comes to color work, but would like to be able to do it on a laptop. We are planning to do some traveling in the near future and thought a laptop would be easier to get in the home on wheels than a desktop.

Most laptops are not suitable for photo work. The screens are usually low quality and can not be calibrated. The other most significant problem is viewing angle. Photo quality monitors have viewing angles of greater than +/- 170 degrees.Laptops tend to be lower and so as you tilt the display or move your head to a different angle the image gets brighter or darker as do the colors and therefore you can never really believe what you see.
You would be review the specs of any model you evaluate.
Cheers, Murray

Thanks Don for the heads up. Of course one question leads to many others, I don't even have a clue as to what laptop might be better than another.
Any suggestions?

Google is your friend

If you spend some time comparison shopping you will be able to narrow down what features are important to you.

Size/weight/battery life, etc.

I just spent some time shopping for a laptop for my nephew. Bottom of the line Acer/Asus/Gateway/HP are running ~ $400.

I decided to spend another $75 and purchased a 15" Dell. Simply a more robust carcass.

Windows 7 Home
Intel® Core™ i3-390M processor (2.66Ghz, 3M)
4GB Single Channel DDR3 Memory
15.6" High Definition (720p) LED with Truelife Display and Integrated Webcam
Intel® HD Graphic
500GB SATA Hard Drive (5400RPM)

If you are away from a plug in for extended periods you might want to consider the 9 cell battery over the 6.

In hindsight when I purchased a laptop for myself to shoot tethered I wish I would have chosen a 17" screen vs the 15". Aging eyes

The real estate would have been worth the slightly bigger size and weight.

And not long after the purchase I needed to be out in the field all day and upgraded the battery to a 9 cell.

Last is to consider what software you will be running. You may want to upgrade to the i5 and more ram.

Having only used my laptop for tethering I can't say how it would perform as a main work station.

Cheers, Don

I asked myself this question about a year ago. I knew two things, I wanted a high performance machine that could efficiently run CS5 and LR3, as I work with 20+mb RAW files, and I wanted an anti-glare screen. So I went out and customized a Sony VAIO with a i7, 8gb ram, and 256mb SSD because it had a matte/anti-glare screen at a comparable weight and better price vs. the MacBooks (Air or Pro). While I am very happy with the processing power of the laptop, the monitor is virtually unworkable for image editing. The color reproduction simply bad, and the viewing angle is even worse.....
