Been asking two gentlemen here about publishing photos to a certain site, and thy have been great in helping out (you know who you are. Major thanks, well appreciated). I also asked about batch preparing them too in a different thread.
To gather this info in one place to the benefit of all members here I thought of asking this question. What are the steps do you take from the time your photos (jpegs) look good to you to the time they show up in your site. And what software do you use. Thanks in advance for sharing your workflow. __________________

aam1234,
First I use the program Idimager for captioning and framing the images. (you can do this in batch or on a image by image base). The framed images are saved under a new file name. Next I upload the images to my smugmug site using SE explorer. With it you can place the images in albums and give them captions for on the site. SE explorer sends me an e-mail message which is really a xml file. I postproces this xml file using xslt to give me a structure for posting on this forum. The structure is url=http://location to exif info http://location to Medium format images. |

Hi Rense,
You skipped few steps in your workflow. For example, do you resize the pics before letting that program put frames on your pics. Also, how do you sharpen them. Are there any additional things you do to the pics (in your case you put them in frames). Things like that. |

Aam1234,
I don't resize when uploading to smugmug. the medium size format that Smugmug makes is ideal for posting on forums. Sharpening is done 3x times: before any rpocessing, sometimes during processing and a final sharpening according to the medium (print or web). No more things done (most of them occur on the first phases: filling IPTC data (including copyright), renaming , cataloging). |

This is what I do in order,* Keep in mind this is just a hobby at the moment so time is not really a factor.
1. Upload raw pictures to the computer in a folder with a distinct name and date.* I'm trying to take all my pictures in raw now, otherwise the jpegs would be in the same folder aswell. 2. Use Adobe's raw to dng conversion tool to batch rename and batch covert the files to dng. Then I delete the raw's. 3. Next I open the pictures in Adobe bridge and preview my shots.* Then I mark the 1's I like the best and delete the pics that are just horrible. ** I always try to back up my pictures to my external drive at this point but often forget ![]() 4. Next I open my favorites in Adobe raw and try to get them the best I possible can as well as approximate cropping. Then I save them out as tiff's to another folder within the main folder named tiff's. 5.Then I tweak all the tiff's in photoshop to my liking. If I'm working on just 1 or 2 pics I'll usually frame it in photshop with an action. 6.Next I batch process the Images I tweaked.* Sometimes I use Adobe Photshop Elements to make a web gallery for me, or I use photoshop to do it.* They do all the file conversions for me. 7.Then its just a matter of uploading the gallery to my site and linking the gallery. Upload images from card to computer
use Conversion/RAW processor to both weed out images and to do a first pass Review images in Explorer, pick images for final processing. Open selected images in PS CS and apply changes. size images for printing and save create folder. Run irfanview, select images and have it process them for web sized images to a new folder Zip the web sized images folder. Upload zipped file to pbase.com account |

- Download images (RAW) from D200 to Desktop into a "new folder" on the desktop via Picture Project
- Process RAW's into TIFF's via Nikon Capture NX, save with same filename in the same "new folder" (KEEP RAW's) - Process TIFF's, color manage, etc. Save as 100% JPEG (high quality) via Photoshop - Delete TIFF's when they are all JPEG's - Upload JPEG's to Smugmug, my portfolio site, and my pro lab online proof site as original files - Make ZIP archive of the entire "new folder" name it the event name and date - Burn ZIP to DVD's (x2 - one into the fireproof safe, on to a family member's fire proof safe at a different location) - Upload ZIP to online storage sites - Delete photos from desktop hard drive (I dont use external hard drives, its still a hard drive, and CAN crash) |
