Default Cardinal Sin - Lesson Learnt

I have had an external WD drive crash (physical crash, not a software issue) and guess what! Three years of my best work on it, and guess what again! no back-up. Can anyone out there recommend or suggest a reputable company who can replace the heads? I have tried a couple, one in the UK and one in the US but both came back with replies that, on reviewing the companies, appeared to be a prelim to a con. (Gently wipes tear from cheek)

Try Kroll Ontrack Data Recovery ( Kroll Ontrack - recognized leader in legal technologies and data recovery services ). My son used them while in Germany, when he dropped his harddrive on cement floor and wouldn't couldn't get the drive to spin up. They were able to recover about 90% of his drive.
I noticed you are in the UK and they have an office there according to their site. Good Luck

Many thanks.
I will email Kroll.
Never thought to ask WD for their recommendations. I heard they cost a fortune if you send it back to them. Worth a try though.

How much is three years of your best work worth?

Pat

Commercially? Zilch. To me? Almost priceless. However the company I tried also thinks along the same lines
The drive is away with a more reputable company at the moment, let's see what happens.

Are you sure that the disc crashed? Mt WD Elements power supply unit has just failed.
My son tells me the disc unit can be dismantled and the drive installed inside my PC.

I took it to a local PC man who tried a new power supply "Bit" and it wasn't the problem. The initial report and all the research I have done indicates head failure.

I had a WD drive fail on me in a short period of time and so I went to HP. First HP drive failed in less than a week. The replacement HD lasted about 3 months. Tired of external HD's. I back everything up to DVD now. Sorry to hear of your loss.
