Default Microsoft freebies

Not something you see every day - Microsoft have decided that the great unwashed can have Virtual PC 2004 for free!

It's no VMWare, but it's a nice little program to test new or old operating systems. I'm sure there is an ulterior motive here as MS are hardly the most altruistic of companies, but currently I'm damned if I can think of one.

It's because VMServer is free now.

Really? Wow. Well that raises another question - why? Their products were the most expensive but easily the best in that market. Is it because MS are offering it for free, or because of open source pressure? You don't get something for nothing when you're a commercial company, so I guess they have some logic behind it?

I think they want you to try VMServer and then move your stuff to ESX, their full blown VM OS which is way more versatile and more powerful than VMServer. I'm not sure who gave what for free first...but I'm sure VMWare is under some pressure or else it wouldn't give out VMServer for free.
