That's why you don't know! It is a usually unwelcome window that "pops up" advertisng something or other when you are on a website. Can also be a route to spyware etc if you click on a "close" button in the pop up window.

I have to keep IE around because there always is a site out there that doesn't cooperate with FF or Opera.

That is why there is an add-in to FireFox that allows Firefox to open an "IE specific" page. It uses IE to actually open the page inside firefox.

It sounds like a cool extension, but I hate the idea - seems like wearing ladies underwear under you favorite pair of work jeans. (Of course, if you are a female, or cross-dressor, this analogy doesn't quite work. Not that there is anything wrong with that...)

It's one of those things that you hope you'll never need to use - like having a nucelar weapon in your back yard. Until the world gets round to HTML standards it is needed now and again. If a site refuses to render correctly for any non-Microsoft browser then usually I'll move on and it's their loss. Now and again though I need to use IE - an example being eBay where their page for posting an ad is crippled in Firefox.
