Default iMac and Antivirus

Now that I have my new iMac. Do I need to add any anti-virus type software? If so, any recommendations?

No?

Might as well drive a Volvo and when you do, don't wear the seat belt because Volvo's are really safe....

They use to be before they sold out to Ford, and Ford is selling the brand off to the Chinese.
At least a Mac is still in the best of hands!

I use ClamXAv for scanning my email boxes and my download folder. Free and pretty simple to setup.

I've been using an iMac for 3 years now and have never put any kind of AntiVirus or Anti-spy/mal on it....You just don't need it..

I've been in IT for 20 years and all of it has been on the PC side...I wouldn't even think about putting a machine on my network without Anti-virus or Spy/Mal protection..

If it were just me using the machine, I wouldn't bother. I've got a houseful of young men that don't necessarily know any better, even though I tell them about clicking on links and downloading things and to not go to certain sites.

Indeed, because that's a guarantee that they will!

So be glad with your Mac's invulnerability to viruses. If only all parents would realise that.

Arguments could be made either way about the need, but look at it this way. It's better to have something you may not need, then to not have something when it is needed. Free is very good price to pay for any insurance, needed or not.

No, because that socalled "free" anti-virus software in reality provides a false sense of security. As you demonstrate.

How if the heck did I demonstrate a false sense of security. It's certainly not uncommon for most people, (perhaps not you) to have Security software loaded on their computer. I simply suggested weather it is needed or not, it's better to have something than nothing at all.
I suspect your commments are simply a way to start stirring the pot which is your MO. So go ahead and make a bunch of senseless noise. Your only painting a picture of your sorry self.

Mac's are not invulnerable. Just like windows, if you go to a site with a trojan or virus in the script, you will get it if you dont have protection.

According to the Mac troll (Sodeju for those who can't keep up with his current user name), Macs can't get viruses or be affected by trojans.

ClamXav is pretty decent, but I don't run any sort of anti-virus software on either of my Macs.

However, the first thing I do to a Windows machine I build is install antivirus.

No need to use anti virus at the moment on a mac, also all those extra processes that start up because of the anti virus can slow down even the fastest computer.

Mac's can and do get viruses, not common but it is possible. If your connecting to the internet protect it. I use Intego Internet Security Barrier X6 and would recommend it.
