Default G9 or (gulp !) compact 35mm FILM camera ?

Would a compact 35mm film camera have better IQ than a G9 ?

If you were looking for a pocketable 35mm film camera, possibly used, that was the equivalent of a G9, but in film, what would you get ?

I am trying to get DSLR type IQ from someting smaller than a DSLR.

I want something with manual controls (P,A,S,M, metering needle, etc.)

Thanks

I bought a G9.

I rationalized it like this... at ISO80 the G9 probably surpasses film or at least its close. Yes the G9 will have more noise at higher ISOs, but with a film camera you can't even change the ISO without changing film.

My G9 will be here later this week.

for a pocket sized film camera you might end up using APS sized film, which has lower quality.

I've always felt that having a camera quick at the ready is best to pair with "Instant Gratification". The G9 has the quality, auto settings, and most importantly the LCD to give you that gratification right there, while being at an acceptable image quality.

edit -

Tell us how you feel about the G9, I would pick one up right now if my budget was better.

I haven't got my G9 yet. I bought it from Dell at a significant discount and it hasn't shipped yet. I'll give you all my thoughts when I have it.

If you get one, You and I are going to have the same camera kit... a 40D and a G9. Seems like a great combo if you ask me.

definately. I'm using a little 5mp samsung right now as my point and shoot, but the g9 with the hotshoe and so forth looks like a winner.

I had to have a shotshoe on my compact camera. Seen too many highlighted faces from compact cameras. I'm buying a 430EX that I will use on the G9 and the 40D. I'm hoping the G9 will be a pretty good candid indoor portrait camera. But for the really serious stuff I'll haul out the 40D.

Film is such a hassle, I could never go back. That being said, digital compacts have not caught up the film compacts in terms of raw image quality.

I just bought a Panasonic DMC-LX2. It shoots raw and can zoom out to 28mm.

At this point I couldn't imagine using a film compact camera any more - the convenience of digital is so great. Besides, unless you develop and print yourself, any prints processed by a commercial lab would probably not be any better than digital and you lose the instant gratification factor.
Maybe a Leica rangefinder... but I don't think you are looking at that kind of money.

My son had a G7 briefly (before it was stolen). I was surprised on how much of a 'hoot' it was to use. Nicely responsive and image quality that surpassed my expectations. My understanding is that the G9 is even better. Overall, I think you would use a G9 far more than you would a compact 35mm.

I bought a G9 as soon as it was released and loved it.

Stupidly, I dropped the camera in the carpark at work, which i didn't know about initially. 4 Weeks later I got the camera back and it had been run over by some kind of vehicle. Completely broken, so, I saved my money and bought a new one! I love it. This is in addition to my 30D as i wanted SLR control without the bulk as i like to take a camera everywhere i go. Hello there, I sell cameras and therefore buy cameras. I bought the Nikon P5100 and love the hotshoe and convenience (I have many nikon accessories) but I find the focus and lack of RAW or filter threads irritating. I came home the a couple of weeks ago with a G9. I really wish nikon would have made a camera like this, ituitive controls, decent RAW capture speed etc etc. I love it, now I have to save for a 430 flash. By the way, the lx2 is very nice too awsome wide shots but alas no hot shoe ( I have one of those too but converted to IR.)

“If you were looking for a pocketable 35mm film camera, possibly used, that was the equivalent of a G9, but in film, what would you get ?”

I use a Canon G5 digital. When I want to use a pocket-sized 35mm film camera, I use a Canon QL17 Giii rangefinder. Both take excellent photos. The primary difference is that the G5 has a fixed zoom lens while the QL17 has a fixed prime lens.

By the way, if I could replace the LCD of the G9 with the adjustable LCD of the G5 and take the optical finder and manual focusing feature of the G9 and replace it with the rangefinder and manual focusing feature of the QL17, I would have my ideal compact camera.
