My brother & his wife recently got a Canon PowerShot G9 to use in their honeymoon.. I already like its image stabilization feature, here's a sample my brother took in Singapore (handheld)
![]() ![]() I asked him to test its Face Detection feature.. Technology is sure moving ahead ![]() Any G9 users here that can share their experiences? __________________

I find myself really wanting to get one the more I see it used, can't just make the plunge though when I can use the cash for lenses.
Great picture, beautiful tree. |

Got one the other day... still figuring it out, but I've set one of the presets to BnW and... I'm still getting used to it, so far so good. Shooting RAW + the BnW jpeg, it's pretty decent on the shutter lag, write times and at less than 450usd a heck of a value.

It DOES come with a lens. Several lenses actually if you consider the zoom functionality. Image quality? Better than you imgine.....and it's a camera that can go pretty well everywhere that you can. I see a real tendancy to under value non dslr cameras when they can do much of what the larger cameras do, and just as well too, for many applications. |

I love the high end cameras, but it seems the main reason to buy one would be to have almost dslr quality in your pocket. So when I need that, I'll definately grab it. Oh, strobe sync at 1/2500 with f 2.8 and iso 80 shounds nice also. |

My Dad has a G9 and I used it the other day. It's a really nice little camera for sure
It takes great pictures right off the camera and the preset modes are plentiful. If I had the extra cash I would probably go with the S5 though for it's ridiculous Zoom capability and excellent image quality to boot. Best, Jay |

After a few days, I have mixed feelings about this camera but for the most part, I like it... I don't know how the engineers come up with some of the feature sets... the G9 has a series of "My-Color" settings which are useless for me... and the "Trad" iso setting knob can easily be accidentally turned to auto or hi... I liked the old pull and twist better. In many situations it's a great carry along PnS... just a bit kludgy used in manual mode looking at the LCD to compose instead of through the viewfinder. The Viewfinder is not representative of actual frame (only 80%?) which seems strange, but I have a tendency to shoot tight so I get a bonus crop factor if needed
the one thing that really concerns me is breaking that big LCD... one very cool feature is that all sound can be turned off... Considering the cost, I would say it's 75% of an M8 for 1/10 of the cost...I bought mine locally from circuit city for 423 and tax which brought it to about 470usd total... and I have till Jan. 4 to return it... At the rate I'm going it would have well over a thousand frames burned by then. unless it starts acting up, I'll definitely keep it. My Dog took the following image which goes to show... sometimes "beauty" is in the nose of the beholder I'll post a wider variety soon... |

I went through the same thing with the G9 re buying another lens for my 40D versus buying a G9.
I can't carry my 40D everywhere I go. (work, daily stuff, trips, etc.) But I could carry the G9. Its small enough, easily hidable, etc. So the G9 will get me pictures that the extra lens couldn't. That seems like a pretty good reason to have it over another lens. The G9 does things that the 40D won't either. Like take movies. Like do macro shots. And having two (Canon) cameras will be great at events where both me and my SO will want to take pictures. No more "Honey, can I have the camera now ?" And the G9 is a lot less intimidating than the 40D is to hand off to a stranger or camera newbie. Although we all know that the 40D is essentially a point and shoot when in Auto. I am going to be in camera heaven when the G9 and 40D arrive. |

The portability is the best feature. I have a G7 and can grab and go without any planning. With my 40d, I need to decide which lens(s), backpack vs shoulder bag, flash, etc. The G7 sits in a small case which clips on to my belt.
I wish canon made a flash with bounce capability smaller than the 430EX though... Phil G |

I love it, as Phil said, portability is key with this camera. Example image here:
