Default Canon G1X

Anyone actually used the very new G1X?

For those who do not know, the G1X is a P&S with a sensor about halfway between a 4/3's and a APS-C in size. Looks sort of like a G12 on steroids.

Had a -very- brief hands-on 2 weeks ago, my own G1X should arrive anywhere within the next two weeks...

...will keep you (& others ) informed.

Initial hands-on thoughts:

...not that much larger than my (ex-)G12, but for the lens, which looks & feels huge in comparison, the large fixed ring around it is a good hold-point.

...it still fits the sleeve-like OpTech D-Mini that I bought for the G12, but 'squeezing it in' is a bit harder, the neoprene will stretch out a bit more...

...super nice 922K dots LCD...

...did some very basic shots in auto-everything (P-mode) & JPG only, up to ISO12.800... ...unbelievable, even in auto-everything...

...I had anticipated a 'heavier weight': yes, it is & feels heavier than the G12, but not in a 'bad way', since it is a sort of 'compact, dense weight' it adds to the feel of quality.

...the zoom range is indeed very useable, decent wide (~28mm) to decent/mild/portrait tele (~110mm), feels like the 15-85 (APS-C) or 24-105 (FF), very good general purpose / walkaround length

...more to follow...

...€0.02...

Kindest regards!

First port here, had some time with the canon gx1 love the control but the view finder is horrible. Canon should have don't something with completely stopped me from investing in this model.

Hi
G 12 is also a good camera but when you want to zoom quickly, you can not zoom, because there is no manual zooming possible, that is why I prefer Fuji Prosumer cam like HS 20, having manual zoom facility like DSLRs.

Thanks & Regards

Certainly a nice image, but only web sized (Sigh!). And when you are in the land of Grolsch why would you drink Warsteiner? Grolsch is my favorite beer but there are only one or two stores in town still selling it. I do not know what I am going to do if they stop.

Back to the subject of the thread. How is the focus speed on the G1X. Is the viewfinder as bad as some say, or is it just those folks that do not understand a viewfinder camera is not a modern SLR? I like the VF on my Olympus C-5050z just fine. I also use the LCD like a ground glass back on the tripod, which I would think would be even better on the G1X?

As soon as I have more images, I will put the originals on PBase, this is just a start

my personal favorite is Brand Bier,

but early in the season we buy 'what's on discount', so in this case that was a sixpack of Warsteiner

- IMO the focus speed is decent enough, faster than G3, Pro1 or G12, but no match for a DSLR.
- the optical viewfinder is the same 'pee-hole' as in the G3 or G12: by far not the best OVF, but better an OVF than no OVF, in certain situations I will need and use it, no problem.
- Using the LCD when tripod-ed is indeed a nice experience due to the LCD's excellent view and maneuverability , the view is really a lot better than on G12 (G12: 460.000dot LCD, G1X: 920.000dot LCD)

Thanks Max, it looks like the G1X is a pretty desirable camera for us RF/VF type people.

It's decent, and it's on sale is a good enough reason (GRIN!).

Agreed!

When taking bracketed shots for HDR processing with my G12, I have started using the LCD for
framing etc, and then use the OVF as I can then hold the camera still enough for 3 shots that will align.
Trying to create a bracketed set while looking at the swing-out LCD usually fails because the subsequent image alignment is poor.

3 x RAWs at 2EV spacing, processed with SNS-HDR Home.

Martin
