I think this needs more DOF with sharpness throught the subject, also a diffused light overhead to light the top of the links.

I used 2 speedlights with shootthru umberla from both sides.
do you think using a softbox above is better?

A soft box above would do the trick. Umbrellas are best left to portraits while soft boxes or diffusion panels work better for still-life, especially when the subject has a reflective surface. Nothing uglier than the reflection of an umbrella.

I agree, of course. You have to remember when your shooting anything that is highly reflective be it gold, silver, chrome or even a mirror...you are capturing whatever is being reflected in the surface. If there is nothing there, that area will go dark or even black. Why? That's what was in that area in the reflection, a dark room. Put a white card so you see it in that same area, being sure it gets some light form the light source and that area will now reflect the white card and render a more truer tone of the object.

Jewelry is best shot with multiple exposures for DOF. Photoshop makes merging these (typically 3) shots very easy.
