Default exclusive rights

Hi,
I have been approached to by the tourism dept. of my country about buying some pics i have of the island. they want the exclusive right to the pics.
I have never sold the right to any of my pics before. so my question is what should i charge for exclusive rights? and should i put a time limit as to how long they can have the rights.

Any advice would greatly appreciated.

Unless they are prepared to buy your copyrights completely... for say $6000.00US per image, you definitely want to limit the period and type of usage in your license. It's not at all unusual for a client to license exclusive rights, but the license should still have clearly defined limits on how the image is used, whether it can be modified and used, how long it will be used, what media types are allowed, blablabla. The price is also dependant on those same criteria.

Can you supply more details?

Thanks blinky.

The pics will be used to market the island in some tourism brochures that will sent all over the world. There is one particular pic the want to keep and use like a logo. They dont want a time limit on that one. they want one flat price for it and they keep it. I dont want to part with so soon cause i got a couple offers use that same image. A gallery on a bigger island wants to display and sell copies of it.

advice needed

It's VERY unusual to sell all copyrights to an image when it has value beyond a single specific client. The price should reflect that you are relinquishing ANY right to use an image which you created and consider personally valuable, several thousand dollars at a minimum because they intend to use it commercially. To price selling out the full copyrights, you have to balance what it's worth to you to keep the copyrights against what they are willing to pay. It's a tricky business... just remember, YOU created it, YOU own the copyrights and YOU can do what you please with that image; if you sell them the full copyright package, those things cease matter forever.

It's reasonable for them to want exclusive use of the image, but if they want absolute control in all media forever... they have to pay big for it. The fact that you have interest from others in it supports the idea that it has value. Assuming they will meet your price, you have to make the choice of whether to keep or sell.

Do you think i should put a time limit on them as how long they can have the rights to it and if so how long would recommend?

Start with one year and the option to renew the license assuming that's meets your own needs.
