Default Shutter actuations on new 5DmkII

I ran a shutter count program on the new camera today and it showed 936. I received the camera on the 2nd of February and ran it through Reikan FoCal software on the 3rd and again on the 5th as I wasn't happy with performance. On the 3rd 180 test shots were fired and on the 5th 95 were fired. In the process of trying out the camera I took 294 shots. That leaves 367 actuations when I received the camera. Should a new camera have that many? I have been underwhelmed by the performance thus far.

I'm wondering is this camera had been returned to the place I bought it from. Opinions?

Yeah, seems like a lot of it was truly a NEW camera. One would think new would be like 0 to 10, maybe 100 but that is a stretch. If they spot checked and grabbed your camera off the line and ran high dose of QA you would think it would go to the Refurb site.

Sure that was new, new? I'd probably ask Canon if it were me. Or whoever you bought from, as they should know if it was a dealer play toy, and if so, shouldn't sell as new...

There's that possibility that it has been returned
by someone who has rejected it, in such case it
shoulda been priced as an open box special. I'm
always buying OBS deals to keep costs down. It
doesn't bother me that someone else may have
rejected it .... cuz most "someone else"s really
don't know schidt from shinola anywho. OTOH if
I receive something that doesn't cut it according
to my needs or expectations, acoarst I return it !

You did buy a 10 yr old model, so it's anyone's
guess about the few hundred actuations, and I
can see how it might be "exempt" from the OBS
rating and discount cuz the supply of new MkIIs
would be pretty thin now. Supply and demand.
If you don't want the item, or feel you paid too
much, someone else will gladly step up for it.

Sounds like this unit may have been used as a demo for prospective buyers at the camera store front counter.
I would definitely voice my concerns with the vendor.

Thanks for the comments everyone. It was actually introduced 6 years ago next month and pricing is to my liking on a well established body. I bought it as brand new and was assured it wouldn't have been put back in new stock if returned before. IMO just as some of you over 300 shutter actuations isn't a new camera. It was sent back yesterday after a call to the supplier and they will replace it. First move before calibrating with Reikan FoCal software will be checking the number of actuations on the camera.

Thanks again.

Good deal. Yeah, wasn't 10 years old. And should not be labeled "new" if not new and folks can get in trouble for that false advertising....

I see I put the wrong version in the title. This is an mkIII not mkII. Probably why the 10 years was mentioned.

Keep in mind that shutters in cameras are similar to engines in vehicles. They are all tested at the factory before being sent out. A car engine can and is easily tested out since the body. When you buy a new car the mileage for that car may only be a couple of miles, but that engine has been run for a period of time, the performance mapped flushed then filled with new fluids before being installed in a body.

A camera shutter I would suspect is tested after it has been installed in the camera and the testing will include many other components. That allows for any necessary adjustments to be made. The typical number of in factory shutter actuations I don't know.

Will be inneressing when we get the
count reported on the replacement,
which oughta be in a factory sealed
packaging.
