Exclamation Windows won't display new CR2 file -> here's solution

In order to display the Canon CR2 RAW files from their newer cameras i.e. 7DmkII you must purchase a 3rd party codec pack. It solves the problem completely and the CR2 files display in thumbnails and in windows viewer etc with no hassles. When I got my copy awhile back it was only ~$10 USD

This works real well and it’s free. https://www.usa.canon.com/internet/p...os-7d-mark-ii/

Pick your camera and your OS and download DPP. Easy peasy.

While every Canon user should be running DPP,
such a problem also depends on your version of
Windows.

My Win-8 PC shows only icons for raw files, but
my Win-10 machine shows large thumbnails

Can't speak to that but my machine running High Sierra has no difficulty showing even the newest .cr2 file types.

NO Canon software affects the way windows displays graphics in its native software. The solution I presented installs the correct codecs (look the term up) which operates on windows kernel. Canon Software the utility, and DPP are quite good, but their cataloger sucks big time.

You are 100% correct. For viewing thumbnails in a folder, there is no other solution to view RAW file previews.

Thanks for the link, Id like to be able to see my NEF files too!

Check the web site I believe that codec covers it as well. It is pretty well up todate and extends to many of the more esoteric formats as well.

Andrew, Just had a chance to try it on Nikon NEF (810) files it worked on them as well.

Dunno what's unique about this, but thumbnails for CR2 files from my 7D Mark II display just fine for me in Windows 10 Pro with no known add-ons....

And can you say that about Windows 7 & 8? NO, I didn't think so. I can guarantee though that the next version of CR2 & NEF's won't display on your 10.
