Default Canon EF 24-70mm F4.0 L IS USM

As mentioned in other posts:
I have recently sold my EF 24-70mm F2.8L 'I' and EF 24-105mm F4 L IS USM and got myself the new EF 24-70mm F4 L IS USM as my main 'walkabout' lens on my (also new) 5DIII.

For those perhaps struggling with the same dilemma , or for those just curious , I will share my thoughts and reasoning , as usual, just *my* 0.02 worth...

1- with the coming of the new 24-70F2.8L 'II' the old 'I' was sharply dropping in (resale-) value, so I decided to 'sell early' and get the maximum possible 'refund'.

2- perhaps the most important reason: I no longer have/do the 'reportage work' necessitating a '24-70F2.8', the shoots that do present themselves are studio-jobs from tripod at F10-F13, that could as-easily and as-beautifully be shot with a decent copy of the old 28-135mm IS This made me re-think my camera and lens setup/system: it should be more in line with my 'personal wants' and not so much more in line with my 'professional needs'.

3- I also decided to sell my 5DII now that it still had some value left. While reading and studying the 1-D X AF system (as also found in the 5DIII which I was preparing to buy) I noticed that with several lenses (a.o. 17-40F4L, 24-70F4 L IS and 24-105F4L IS) the center cross type AF point still performed as previously only with F2.8 and faster lenses, another reason why the F2.8 becomes less important...

4- 'personal wants': when doing 'walkabout' photography, I like to shoot the landscape wide, so minimal distortion at the wide end is a pr, and I like to add some flower/plant/insect/object detail(s).

5- testing revealed that the new 24-70F4L IS has very little WA distortion at 24mm, less than 24-105 and almost on-par with 24-70F2.8 'I', from the zooms only the 24-70F2.8 'II' bests it. The new Digital Lens Optimization tool automatically - when used correctly - eliminates the minimal distortion, almost eliminates remaining CA and further improves (corner-) sharpness.

6- testing also revealed that the Macro mode is extremely sharp and extremely useful: a switch on the side makes the lens back elements move forward, creating sort-of a macro-extension tube inside the lens itself.

7- (important for the Macro mode) the 24-70F4 L IS has the same excellent 4-stop hybrid IS as found in my 100mmF2.8L IS Macro and in my PowerShot G-1 X's 28-105mm lens, a very noticeable improvement over the 3-stop IS of the 24-105L IS

7- always wanting to have 'hands-on' experience and knowledge, I was pleased that my dealer, JapanCamera.nl, got a (relative to the Dutch market) early copy of the 24-70F4L IS that I was able to and allowed to testshoot. The testshoot confirmed all read in the tests, so I decide to also sell the 24-105F4 L IS and try to get a good 'package deal' for a 5DIII+BG-11+24-70F4L IS, in which I recently succeeded.

And since a lens-thread is useless without some pics

a lamp...

same lamp, detail, 70mm @ normal closest focusing distance (0.38 meter)

same lamp, detail, 70mm @ Macro position & again closest focusing distance

The new Canon 77mm II center-pinch lens cap provided with the 24-70F4L IS, again 70mm @ closest focusing distance

same lens cap , 70mm @ Macro position & again closest focusing distance

And two real-world-samples

Flower...

...and a beer, might have one after I have this posted

(Images SOOC Small JPG's, only resized and 'framed' for web-presentation)

..as stated earlier, *my* 0.02 worth...

Kindest regards,

Max@Home

I cannot, for the life of me, understand why Canon did not come out with a 24-70mm f/2.8L IS lens - instead of the 24-70mm f/2.8 II and the 24-70mm f/4L IS. Combine a 24-70mm f/2.8L IS lens with the outstanding high ISO capabilities of the 5DIII and the latest 1D cameras and you would have a remarkable low light setup...

The rumormill said they did develop one, but weren't happy with the performance.

I'm kicking around the f/4L and the tamron 24-70 IS, although I don't have the money atm.

...and the MSRP they had calculated they had to ask for an IS version: rumoured ~$2.950/~2.950...

Then why kick them around ? Won't do them any good , you risk an expensive repair & you had no money to start with...
