Default Slaving with a 580EX

I'm thinking of picking up another flash to slave with my 580EX. I would love to get another 580EX, but the cost is prohibitive. As such, I'm looking for a used 430EX or 420EX. I also wouldn't mind picking up the ST-E2 transmitterAny thoughts on these choices? Any other choices I should be considering?

Thanks!!

Ian

Ian,
I'm using a 580EX as master and 2 copies of a 420EX for back and side lighting. Works perfect!.

Hi ianacole,

I use a 580ex+CP-E3, a 420ex and have recently added the ST-E2.

The system works beautifully! As slaves, a (used) 420ex and/or 430ex will do great.

One other flash to consider is a (used?) 550ex, a bit more versatile than the 420ex as slave, and a higher output.

A really decent used one (with all accessoiries etc) is a bit more expensive as a new 430ex...

) always good to know all your options )

Kindest regards,

Thanks guys!! I think the 550 will be a bit out of my price range for right now, even through ebay. I do like the idea of a couple of 420's though. I'll have to see what I can pick up

...one last 'caveat':

With the 550ex and 580ex as master, you have channel A, B and C. The ST-E2, for some stupid reason, does not support the 'C'-channel...

How and why is this important?

In it's calculation, the flashunit uses the output it sees from the flashes set to the A and B channel to determine the lightoutput for the subject.

You can use A as 'front-light', B as 'side-light', so you can check them separately using test-flash or modelling light.

The C-channel is used separate from this metering, to lightup the backdrop, or create a 'hairlight', and it's output is not taken in the calculation, so it can also be used as an 'extra-light' to deliberately 'overexpose' a specific area or to create a 'high-key' effect.

With the ST-E2 as master this effect is hard to emulate, but it is great to use with two flashsgroups (A and B) in a certain 'ratio' (2/3 front, 1/3 side and the likes) )

) trust this information will come handy some day )

...*my* €0.02 worth...

Kindest regards,

Max@Home

Thanks Max. I do hope that information will come in handy some day, as that will mean I actually have enough skill and wherewithall to set up a shot using multiple channels.

I use a 580 with two 420`s and it works well.... Also have the ST-E2 which gets a fair bit of use as well....
You should look into getting some used 420`s, great units...

I use 580+420+430. Works really well.
