Default Canon 50D contrast issue???

Ok so this isn't the first time this has happened during outdoor natural light photos, but I'm just wondering if anyone else has had issues with very FLAT pictures using RAW. I'm at work so I don't have examples, but I was out over the weekend taking pic's for the neighbors kids and a few of them came out incredibly flat. The pic's were under a large tree where the sun skimmed the girls hair from high and behind...I used a reflector to open up the shadows a bit...But the photo's were just horrid. I had to do a lot of PS magic to even make them doable...

I took some more pics in the same area and they were better..Same lens, same light, almost same settings...

I'll post examples tonight....Just trying to vent some frustration...

...key words are 'from high and behind': IMO that is eating your contrast

Now, the only trouble is, some people will read your thread title and assume you had some kind of problem with the 50D but not bother to read any of the thread.
