Default 7D or 5D MkII??

I am having a hard time choosing between the two. I know one is $1000 more but I am not worried about that. I don’t do BIF’s and will use it sometime for sports which will lead people to say 7D. But I do like the FF factor and the better ISO (to me) performance of the 5D II. I also hear the 5D IQ is better. Right now I have a XTi with 24-105L and 70-200L. Looking for camera I won’t have to upgrade for a long while.

Please help me out.

Rusty

In that case: go FF, 5D2.

I think you know the differences between them.

Only be prepared to pay high $$ for any new lenses, as optical flaws and compromises in 'cheap' lenses will show much more, so you will be 'forced' to remain in the 'L' area, with a few (mostly/only) prime lens exceptions.

But know that the 24-105L IS you already own is about the best walkaround lens you will ever be able to get for that body, that is until Canon releases a 24-105L IS version II

...€0.02...

Kindest regards!

I agree with Max (it is really hard NOT too). The 5Dmkii is simply superb. Also, and this is picking nits, I actually bought the 7D and returned it. There are toooooooo many "moron" features on the camera and not enough well thought out features (or namely how you get to them) like a pro body. I will be posting something soon on a different thread. You will LOVE the 5D. In fact, I have a 1DmkII and I was thinking of upgrading (changing). I have decided after having to return the 7D that I will keep it for sports, and buy a 5DmkII for portraits, macros, etc. etc.

Sounds like you already know what you want. If you did mainly sports, I would say the 7D, but from what you describe, sounds like you wouldn't be happy with anything but the 5DII (except maybe the 1DsIII).

Where does the 1D Mk4 fall into this discussion? It would seem to offer some nice features for birders?

I just got the 5d mk II about 6 weeks ago and it's pretty awesome. The frame rate is a bit slow for sports but it's probabaly a better choice for most everything else. FF is great, you'll never go back after using it.

Rick, How is it going from the XTi to the 5dII? (stupid question, I know) Did it blow you away? (what I am expecting it to do) I don't know about U but anything above ISO 400 is junk on my XTi, 400 is pushing it.

So far, I've been very happy. I can go up to about 1600 ISO and remain pretty noise free, and at 3200, the noise starts to get pretty nocticable.

I really like the Auto ISO feature, but (probably my only complaint about the camera) I wish I had a little more control over the setting for this feature. For example, in aperature priority, you set the apperature, it will set the shutter to the focal length, and then chose the appropriate ISO. The max ISO it will pick is 3200, which starts to show noise. I'd like to be able to set a max ISO of my choice (probably about 1600). Or in situations where you don't need an exceptionally high ISO, I'd like to be able to set parameters around shutter speed, for example, I'd like to be able to tell it to pick a shutter speed of 2X the focal length.

The FF sensor really does deliver great photos. I liked my XTI, but this is just a whole different level of camera. I'm very happy I made the jump the the 5D Mk II.

Default 5D MkII BIF

You said you did not do a lot of BIF images. However, now that you have the 5DII how well do you think it would do?

I'm about 2 weeks into a 5d2 and am stunned at the quality of the images it produces. Absolutely love this thing and don't regret my decision in the least. Although it did hit me the other day that the gear in my camera bag is worth more than the car I'm driving... heh.

BTW, I'm coming from a 40D and it's like night and day.

i shot an event today on the 5dmk2 and were between 2000-4000 ISO pretty much all the time. The noise was so good the standard noise reduction in C1 was well enough for the end result. Of course, you need to make sure to expose the subjects correct (as underexposed images is noise heaven).

The low noise quality of the 5D mk2 gave me the opportunity to shoot this event without using flash (as this would have been very disruptive) and even do some HD video segments as extra perk for the client.

I actually asked the key speaker afterwards if he found the constant photography disruptive in any way and the reply was "I didnt even notice you were there".

Could this have been done on a 7D? i dont know since i havent used one yet, but i am very sure i would not have had this image quality with the 50D =)

Sorry, but that is a bit silly statement isn't it? Of course you get pro features on a pro body ... but not on a body 1/3 or 1/4 of the price.

And you are hopefully aware that the 5D operates in exactly the same way as the 7D? I think you need to do more research before you give recommendations about 2 cameras that you obviously don't know.

Felix: Before you go throwing about insults, you need to review your math skills. $2,699 for a 5DmkII is NOT 1/3 or 1/4 the pirce for $3699 for a 1Dmk3!

Secondly: I know the cameras quite well. I shot with a 5dmkII and 1Dmk3 on several occasions, including last week. Regarding your point on features: some of the older "pro" cameras actually have LESS features than the newer prosumer ones. The two above mentioned cameras are perfect examples. However, pro bodies are generally built better, generally and have better weather sealing, etc. Also, they usually are a 1.3 (or FF) vs. 1.6x cameras, etc. In fact most of the L series glass is designed for FF (the 70-200 for example) vs. 1.6x. The fact of the matter is: The 5DmkII will take a better picture than the 7D in almost every instance imaginable (with the exception of fast action). THAT is what the OP was asking about PERIOD.

I guess what I am saying Felix: I know what I am talking about. You may not agree with me (and I quite frankly don't care after your insult), but that is your right.

The 7D is 1600 $ and the 1D IV 5000 $ = 1/3. What I take issue is that you are saying the 7D has moron features like missing AF tight to spot meatering for example (in your other thread) and then compare it to the 5D from operational view (not image quality) which does not have that either and has actually much less features in almost every regard. So the "only" thing left in favour of the 5D is the larger sensor. Does that alone better images? - maybe. The 7D has newer features that one just needs to get his head around. Choose whatever cam you want but stating the 7D has moron features and then practically implying in your threads the 5D is superior operational is just plain wrong.

If metering tight to AF points is sooo important to you how can you live with the 5D II? You knew before you got the 7D that the 5D has the "superior" or bigger sensor. So if that's all that matters to you why did you get the 7D in the first place?

In short I don't get your rant about the 7D at all.

Sorry for the silly ... that was stupid to say from me.

Before you all think that Felix and I are going to get into a fight over this, don't worry, it's all good.

The problem with posting like this instead of simply all sitting in a room and talking is that you can get caught up in dead ends/wrong turns.

We all have our opinions based on our needs and wants.

Have a fantastic weekend Felix and enjoy whatever cameras you have. Squeeze every drop out of them!

Rusty, it seems to all come down for you to choosing between FF IQ and fast FPS. A choice only you can make.
