Default feeling like losing an old friend - 24-70 to 24-105

This is a trying time for me. I decided to bite the bullet and try out a 24-105 as I found 70 was just a little too short on my 5d. I'm heart broken though, the 24-70 has been a tank, and old friend of mine. I've only had it a little less then a year, but it's done an amazing job with everything I've thrown at it.

Is there any other camels that have made this step and can give me advice? The 24-70 was on my camera I would say 95% of the time (which makes me wonder why the hell I bought a 70-200 IS also), so I'm hoping the ever 35 will make a difference. Since I shoot more in studio ranging from 5.6~11 I don't think the 2.8 to 4 difference will be too noticable.....but I just need advice.

Plus my copy is just so nice!

Any one interested, I haven't placed it up yet but I am planning on selling the 24-70 with hood for $975 shipped if things go right. It's a little over a year old now (april 2005 is the build date).

Hi, I,ve just got my 24-70L after a long hard decision also. I thought about the 24-105L, but as I am using the 20D and I already have the 70-200 2.8 IS I went for the 24-70. I haven't really had time to evaluate my new lens yet, but I hope I can get the same impressive results that you have. I just need someone to model for me. You have some great pics in your gallery and I am assuming that most of the portraits were taken with the 24-70. What camera were you using prior to the 5D?
Hopefully my next upgrade will be to the 1dMk IIN. With its 1.3 crop factor my 24-70 will still be fine for what I will use it for.
Ps. Great gallery website.

I've thought about replacing my 24-70 for a 24-105 on my 1Ds, but at this point, it's only been a thought.

Thanks Allcart, I used a 20d before that. And way way before an olympus point and shoot. Some I tried renting a 135L and loved it, so I might look for one of those also.

I came from 20D to 1DMk2 and like the 24-70 f2.8L.

I am the sort that would not mind carrying a few extra lenses and extra bodies but I reckon the 24-105 f4L would give the full frame users a very versatile range.

Btw, any direct comparison between 24-70 f2.8L and 24-105 f4L on image quality?

Cheers
KH

I 'm very happy with my 24-70 f 2.8 you cannot beat that lens
Well i use my 30D with 70-200mm non IS ,and my 24-70 with my Mark IIN
I don't think you need a extra lens spent the $$ and get an extra Camera like a nice used 20d
You will love it to have both lens at your fingertips at the same time
Thanks Emmanuel

I don't have first hand experience, but reading Fred Miranda reviews I found that most liked their 24-70's and many did not like their 24-105 as well. (Based on overall rating #)

I am very happy with the 24-105. My copy is extremely sharp with great color! No knocks on the 24-70 just compliments on the 24-105.

I absolutely love my 24-70L. It's imagery is great although it is a pretty heavy chunk!

It has made me rethink my primary battery of lenses. I had the 17-40 f/4L, 28-135 IS and the 70-200 f/4L. That was a pretty nice setup with the 17-40L giving me 11mm wider than the 28-135 IS.

However, after purchasing the 24-70L (I got a great deal on a minty one from a pro who was converting to the 24-105mm F/4L IS lens) the 17-40L just didn't seem wide enough. It was only 7mm wider than the 24-70L. Hardly enough to keep an expensive lens like that for. I have replaced it with the 12-24mm f/4 Tokina. I absolutely love that lens and it makes a great partner with the 24-70L.

My old friend the 17-40L will soon go the Ebay route. Nice thing about L lenses is that if you buy one used, you will always get your money back when selling it.
