I can't help it -- I'm a stupid guy.
OK, so I bought a 5D on a whim when I saw a fantastic internet special price. I had decided I was going to buy one -- but it was going to be in a few months. Anyway, I have a 70-200mm f/4L and a 400 f/5.6L that will obviously both work on the camera. Being impulsive and dumbshit I just realized my EF-S 17-85mm won't work on the 5D. I'm thinking of geting a Canon prime 50mm like my old film days. I'm curious what you would do. David __________________

I would second that.
The 24mm on a full frame is actually wider than 17mm on a 1.6x (effectively 27mm). Also, it complements your existing collection of 70-200mm so you got 24 to 200 fully covered. I got that lens too and it is great on both full frame and cropped sensor. Hope it helps. Cheers KH PS. Buying the 5D at great price can't be that stupid ![]() |

Hi David,
Just a thought, but for about the same money,($1,150) you can pick up the Tamron 17-35, 28-75 and still have almost enough to pick up a* 50mm 1.4, 85mm 1.8 or 100mm* for portraits. Another option is the (pricey) 24-105 F4 L (IS) That being said, B&H has a used 24-70 right now at $999 + ship. http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/cont...yUsed&Q=264304 Darryl |

A 50mm like in the old film days: did you actually use your film-50mm much? The reason I am asking: the 50mm perspective is so 'standard' that most people (me included ) find it hard to shoot on a fullframe.I would sooner opt for the EF35mmF2.0 or the EF85mmF1.8, a tad wider or a tad longer... That said, the EF50F1.4 is an excellent lens (I use it as 'close-portrait' 80mm FoV-lens on my 20D ), and image-quality will not disappoint you.Or: just to give the '50mm' (the focal lenght) a try, as you could also opt for the EF50F1.8 II, only $100. If you like the focal lenght, you can sell the 1.8 for almost what you paid for, and upgrade to the EF50F1.4 )For more flexibility, like others have advised, an EF24mm-70mmF2.8L (or even the EF24mm-85mmF3.5-F4.5) would be a good choice, if you want even more reach (and quality!) the EF24-105F4L IS is something you could explore. I wouldn't recommend a 28mm-135mmF3.5-F5.6 IS, as this lens is of older design (type 1 IS), and it is not known for it's superior image quality, especially when shooting wide-open. And, as Darryl_Lessere points out, there are also a number of very good Tamron (and Sigma) lenses out there, if you care to take that route... your call... )Hope this helps some, *my* €0.02 worth... Kindest regards! Max@Home |

This is all good advice. Thank you all. I am trying not to spend another $1,000 on a lens right now otherwise I would opt for the 24-70. I'm still trying to get over hitting the "buy" button on the 5D. (and anxiously awaiting it's arrival!) The 50 vs. 35 vs. 85. My thought is I have the 85 on the 70-200 so I only need a wider alternative right now. The 35 is an interesting choice.

Well, the "low price" 5D that I was going to buy was a scam. When I went to confirm my order I was passed to a fast talking salesman who suggested $1200 worth of upgrades and of course there was the eight week delivery time. So I cancelled.
Still will probably purchase one but I'm back on the slow boat -- this week. |

David, when you get it, be sure to also get the 350$ Canon EF 50/1.4 lens with it.
Great lens that has L image quality and a very affordable price. Of course, the 85/1.8 might be more suitable for portraits ... so get two ![]() On my 20D, my Sigma 30/1.4 EX and Canon EF 50/1.4 are my most used and treasured lenses. That would be 50 and 80 mm on the 5D. Best regards, Andy PS: AND ALWAYS CHECK WWW.RESELLERRATINGS.COM BEFORE YOU ORDER!!! (Sorry, had to shout that. It's just too important, as your example shows.) |

No that would be 30mm & 50mm on the 5d with full frame. Joe __________________
