Default Why not wide angle lens and PSAM functions in Canon compacts

Hi Friends
I have a Canon Pewrshot 430 camera, gives good result, now i want to upgrade to some high quality compact camera, i want canon only , but when i search on Canon website i found Canon 980 Ixus but there r no Manual, Aperture Priority, Shutter Priority modes, no Wide angle lens, i searched in Powershot section most camera donot offer PSAM modes, meanwhile i found a previous model 590 IS has PSAM modes. My question is that why donot canon include PSAM modes in high tech cameras like Ixus 980, Ixus 870 etc. They have already given PSAM modes in cheaper cameras like Powershot 590 IS, my another querry is that why Canon do not make compacts with 25mm or wide lenses ?? There r other camera makers like Panasonic, samsung, Nikon all r making cameras with wide lenses.
Since i am loyal to Canon and i donot want to shift to other make that is why i am asking Canon and canon users, why donot they make a compact with wide angle lens and PSAM functions.

Thanks
alok

Looks like that is sold in the USA as the " ELPH, SD990 IS" , ELPH?...IXUS?.... who comes up with these names??

Canon USA lists the ELPH line as "Stylish" cameras and not one of the "High-End, Advanced Digital Cameras" like the G series (G9, G10) or SX series (SX1 IS, SX10 IS) which have those modes you asked about, zoom lenses that start at a 28mm equivilent and the ability to shoot in RAW mode in at least the G10 & SX1 IS.

Maybe you should look at the "G" or "SX" lines.

Hi Rogue
Thanks for reply, G and SX series is not pocketable, i agree that there r all functions in G 10, but i donot like the looks and body of G 10, why donot Canon remodels body of G10 and makes it looking good , i have rated Canon G10 as the best among compacts but the ugliest camera. that is why i am not purchasing this camera, do u agree with me ??

Thanks

The looks don't bother me but I agree the G10 is a bit big for most pockets and the SX series way to big for any pockets (I've got a S5IS which is the same body).

Hi Alok

One other good compact is a Powershot A540. that is "pocketable" has P,Av,M,Tv and scene modes , has 6mp uses penlights and you can add a wide angle lens on it , but only second hand available

Hi Dirk
You r right , there is another model Canon powershot 590 IS with all functions except Wide angle lens. body is slightly bigger, Ixus models r easily pocketable but there is no PSAM functions in those models and no wide angle, let us wait for new launches from Canon with these functions.
You r using Nikon D50, 70 and Canon 300D, do u feel any difference between Canon SLR and Nikon SLR's picture quality, which one is better, Canon or Nikon ?? R u satisfied with Nikon d50
or D70 is better than D 50, please let me know.
thanks

the IXUS/SD model line never has, and IMO, never will have full PSAM functions, as it is seen by Canon as a true 'Point-and-Shoot', so you are in for a looong wait

As mentioned earlier, the G10 is the most pocketable (cargo-pants ?? ) and capable ('full PSAM') in the Canon line. If not pocketable, you could put it in a small clip-on belt-pack (like a cellphone)... but if that is too big, you could look to the Panasonic/Leica line, they have some pretty decent performers too

Kindest regards,

Hi Max,
got your reply, seems i have to wait for many years for a Canon Ixus with PSAM functions, i have seen reviews of Lumix LX3 , very good but goes to 60mm only , due to 60 mm i have rejected this model, There is Nikon S710 with PSAM but i donot have any idea of this camera's result, G 10 sounds better with everything in this model , but this is the ugliest canon , i donot like it's look.
I have seen your gear list , r u a professional photographer, u have 5D MKii and all 2.8 lenses, have u used a G10 ?? What is the picture quality of G10??
Thanks

I do not care how-it-looks, I look at it's functionality and image quality, and those make it beautiful in it's ugliness

yes, amongst other things I am a professional photographer

I have handled and played with a G10, but not seriously 'used' it. ( I have and use a G3

and a Pro1

). As can be seen a.o. here and here, image quality of G10 is very good, but , as can be read in many tests, not much better than the competition in spite of the über-decent (form and function ) body...

I have a G10. I wear it using a beltcase like Max mentions.
For one thing: I do like the form factor of the G10, including how it fits into my hand.

Image quality is really good as long as you stay below IS 400.

hi alok

i like all three dslr's a lot , the most used are the D70 and the Canon eos 300 D
but when i need 1600 iso i take the D50 out to " party "

I've PM you with more details..

Cheers
Dirk

ps both Canon and Nikon make camera's
ps 2 It is the man / women behind the camera that makes the picture.
ps 3 I like the simplicity in menu's of the Canon but i sometimes need more possibilites and than i shoot nikon . when i have to be quick i shoot Nikon too because the Writing speed of my D70 and D50 is a heck of a lot faster than the eos 300D
