Rent some different lenses and try them. See what works best for you. Many shops do rental thru the mail at reasonable rates. Much cheaper than buying the wrong lens.
That said, I'm not sure why having the model move closer or moving the tripod is such a big deal. It's doing the grunt work like this (although doesn't seem like much work) that gets stunning results. If you have ever watched a really good pro (no. I'm not), you'd notice how completely anal they are about the tiniest details. It show in their work. |

Thank you for your recommendations. We are going to rent two lenses. The one that Max recommended, the 15-85 and another one that has great reviews to see if we can get better sharpness, the 24-70 L lens. We were also told that if we use strobes rather than continuous lighting, we would get much sharper images, even with the kit lens
