I thought that I recalled a lot of people had trouble with the 300D's shutter around 10k to 20k clicks.

Now if they would just give us a tool that we can use to find out just how many clicks our cameras have on them........

The rating is probably MTBF. Thus look at it as a normal curve with the peak being the 'expected' life.

Interesting data and utility. With this utility, my camera reports 83 more actuations than are indicated by the file names of the image files. I have never reset the image count in the camera. Hmmm...

There are a couple of possibilities there.
Test shots in the factory, and then they reset the counter.
Your camera was a return from a customer who didn't like/want what they bought.
So the number was reset before it was resold.

None of the Canon DSLR boxes are sealed when we get them.

thanx for the utility. Defintely going to test on my 50D tonight. I just went over 22000 images on that camera according to the file numbering (ie. hit 0000 twice and now up to 2000 so will be good to keep track of the "state" of the shutter.

Yep, these were my thoughts as well. Given the quirky focus behavior I've been having with different lenses, I'm inclined to think that it was purchased and then returned.

For the 1D (not including the MKIII) there is a free program here: My Downloads - foxbat's photography

It''s PC only but works well, on RAW and JPGS. I tried to find CanCount, but the site is down - or was 2 weeks ago. This a program a fellow in the UK wrote.

Photo-me is free and tells you everything you could imagine about your image. I even get sensor temp readings at the time of shutter release. It is a kick-a** program.
