Default Tamron 17 - 50mm lens ?

Was considering buying the new Tamron 17-50mm lens to use on my Canon 20D. Has anybody tried this lens already, and what are your opinions of this lens. I want it as a wide angle lens, and as a good carry with you lens for some day to day shoots. Thanking you in advance for your thoughts on this

Hi carsj,

AFAIK this lens is not on the market yet in Europe, I can't find any pics taken with it on PBase, so I doubt if it is the rest of the world either...

It certainly looks good from the specs I have found at Tamron.com, seems a serious built piece of hardware, 16 elements in 13 groups, 400gr/14oz, etc...

Pity it is made for 'Digital Crop DSLR's Only', like the Canon EF-S line.

It is one of two lenses I am eagerly awaiting 'first reports' of (the other being the Canon EF-S 17-55F2.8 IS USM )

The lenght (~27mm- ~80mm FoV on a 20D) is certainly very useable for the purpose you describe (WA and walkaround), the constant F2.8 makes it more usefull in the earlier and later hours outdoor and indoor too (at F2.8 or lower the extra AF sensor in centre of the 20D/30D kicks in, and that helps a lot when focussing in less-than bright conditions, in my experience).

With a listprice of ~$ 750 the streetprice won't be cheap, but then... Canon adds IS and 5mm (8mm FoV ) and asks ~$ 1.150...

If it is - like the add says - in the same league as the Tamron AF28-75F2.8, it certainly is a very serious consideration for anyone seeking a ~28-90 FoV F2.8 for their 1.6x DSLR's...

PS and BTW: I did try the Sigma 18-50F2.8, not a bad one either, considering it's price (~$425)...

...and as always, all the above is just *my* €0.02 worth...

Kindest regards,

Max@Home

I have the Tamron 17-35 (2.8-4) and 28-75 (2. lens and just from my experience shooting with those two lenses, I am sure this new Tamron lens will be of the same high quality.

Cheers,

Sam

I'm very interested in the Sigma 18-50 myself. Could you list what you didn't like baesd on your personal experience?

Thanks

Thanks for the info Max@Home I will have to wait until it comes on the market ( which according to Tamron was supposed to be in Mid April of this year)......Looks like it's not going to be that cheap, but if the quality is as high as Tamron has suggested it is, could well be worth the investment. The price of the Canon, for me anyway is much to steep at this time. I like the idea of the 17-50 range as with my Canon 20D with its x6 factor it gives me a good working wide angle range.
Thanks again for looking into this for me.
