I think with the recent price increase of Nikon glass, at least...the playing field will become more level. And I think Canon should release a new PJ-class camera body pretty soon, to partially atone for their rush to the market with the 1D MkIII.

I bought a Canon for the same reason that I bought a Nikon, a Minolta, a Fuji, a Mamiya, a Polaroid, a Pentax, a Graflex, and an Argus. That reason is that the camera provided me with the features that I needed to take the photographs that I wanted.

The Canon GL-17 rangefinder provided me with a compact size, a fast f/1.7 lens, and the quiet operation that I needed for clandestine street photography.

The Canon G5 digital provided me with a compact size, a swing/tilt LCD, a fast f/2 lens, and the silent operation that I needed for clandestine street photography.

Long story so grab some .
Back in March of 1982 I went to a large camera store in Madison, Wisconsin to purchase a Canon AE-1P. Being a total SLR rookie at the time I let the salesman talk me into buying a Yashical FX-D camera. I was happy with the purchase and, over the next few years, I collected a bunch of Contax/Yashica equipment including a Contax 139 Quartz camera. In October of 1987 all of my camera equipments, with the exception of my tripod which I still have, was stolen and I never replaced it. What with a young family and all I needed the money for other things.
Well this year I decided to get back into photography and purchased a Canon 40D in January. I has all the features I am looking for and a great selection of lenses to fit any type of photography I decide to take up.
So there you have it, I finally have a Canon camera after all these years.

When I was looking at getting my first DSLR I looked at all the manufacturers. When I picked up the Canon it felt so right in my hand, it was easy to use and just an awsome camera all around. And my friend shot with a Canon.

Well I guess I came back to Canon by the luck of the draw ( so to speak ) after posting a wanted to trade add in the local Craigslist and Kijiji.

Traded my Bronica for the Rebel XT kit in my sig.

Sold the Sigma 10-20mm that came with the kit and I am now looking to replace it with a 70-200 f4.

I got a canon because ever since I picked up a camera for the first time, my brother-in-law's actually, it felt good to hold.
Then it just seemed only normal that when the time came, I would buy a Canon...and I did.
That got replaced by Canon and then upgraded to Canon.
My brother has a Nikon. I like that too, but Canon seems more straight forward and easier to control and access to functions.

Once upon a time I had a Canon F1, and a Canon AE1, loved them and had them from 1975 until 1995, Then the Digital cameras started becoming affordable. I ended up with an E series Olympus, great camera but the lens were expensive and not as common, went back to Canon with a 20D and upgraded to the 40D. I use a Canon G10 for those trips where a full bodied SLR is just not conveniant.
I am sold on Canon, personal perference, yes. Nikon is just as good. My biggest thing was the affordability of the lens. I do not make the "good" money anymore so I have to use the dollar the best way I can.

I own a Canon AE-1, and when I wanted to go digital, in 2001-2002, I looked at getting a Canon D30. However, since my FD lenses were practically useless, and the evidence that Fuji's S2 Pro had better color SOOC, I went for the Fuji body and Nikon F mount lenses. I never regretted the choice and I have 2 S2 bodies I still use and they are the only DSLR's I have. BUT... If I were to make the change today, instead of 7 years ago, Canon bodies and lenses would be my choice. No other can have a 50mm f/1.0 lens. Canon's configuration allows for faster lenses than Nikon's F mount can ever hope to achieve. And from what I see from Canon's L glass, noone can complain. Versatility in a system is important to me, but color fidelity is too. Today, as opposed to then, Canon fills the bill. Fuji has been a good camera body. I regret that from what I can surmise, they are getting out of the Pro body biz. The S3 and S5 were, and are good cameras. Nikon and Canon have caught up in the game and produced bodies to out perform the Fuji's and up the megapixel race as well. I know I wouldn't mind having a D300 from Nikon! Or a 1ds MKIII from Canon! But for now, money being a big issue, my S2's are fine. As for lenses, I could use some better glass.

I certainly am not an expert.
But I think Glass is more important than Body.
Bodys change constantly.
From what I've read and from some experience.... Canon glass is the reason I went to Canon.
Once you make that decision you almost have to stick with it for economical reasons.

Why buy a Canon? Whaaat? Well, when you get on your galleons and the native, indigenous people attack you since you are trying to get their gold and use them as slaves and claim you have discovered them...one or two canons will help...oh wait, that's C A N N O N...Happy Columbus Day, folks!

Seriously? If you don't know why, then you need to go checkout what the others have in store...since you must not have anything invested in the system. Check out Olympus, Sony, Pentax and if you must; Nikon ;P...see you back here in couple a days and welcome to the Canon family! LOL

A few trips to Deviant Art which is the worst place possible to see what a camera can do . Honestly, quite a few pics I saw on the net in various places, also an award winning photo in a National Geographic annual photography issue really made me feel nostalgic towards the older Rebel models since the XSi and T1i had come out. The fact that the XTi was the first DSLR I ever fell in love with and the price/feature combination on the Rebel series was icing on the cake.

In terms of lenses, the various focal lengths and all the options with where I could go made me feel like I could have a more "complete" lineup than with other brands.

Upgrade options just made me feel better about going with Canon

I never won a contest when I was using a Nikon F3 back in the day. But I won contests when I was using a cheap Canon EOS 888 camera.

Seriously, the EOS system is more cost efficient compared to Nikon. Plus, in the Philippines, aftersales support for Nikon is practically non-exsistent; whereas with Canon, its aftersales support is a big factor in my purchase decision.

I also find canon bodies and lenses sexier compared to their Nikon counterparts. Canon will also meter with any MF lens out there.

Canon is also an innovator. It made the first in-body af motors as well as IS systems. It is only until recently that Nikon followed suit. :P

just to add a few :

Cano'n's menu on the eos 300D is easy and un complex <> nikon's menu system is complex but gives you more possibilites or freedom .

when i want fast speeds i use the nikon d50 or nikon d70 or F65 (analogue)
when i am not in a hurry have time to shoot and objects are not moving too hard i take the canon because of the slight higher resolution

the canon eos 300D is a fine camera the oly thing i wished is that it writes down the buffer faster after 4 shots it takes about 30 seconds to fully emtpy the buffer , in that time i could have shot 8 frames with my slowest nikon the D50 .

so both cameras are good? : yes the canoin has the advantage of the slight hihger resolution and easier menu's the nikons offer more speed and more flexibilty and freadom to alter several things , like a metering mode .. (for example)

Hmm seems like the EOS 650 is a common theme...

I originally had a Pentax Super Program which I used for field work. It got stolen out of the camp and I needed a replacement quick. The only camera I could find that had similar functionality for about the same price point was the EOS 650.

When I switched to digital many years later, I still had a bunch of lenses and a flash that were compatible with the newer cameras so thats what I went for
