I bought a Canon basically because of cost. I had/still have an AE-1 and loved it to death, so I was always leaning toward a Canon DSLR. I was close to buying a Nikon F100 film camera, until I found a 20D at a great price. I couldn't find a comparable Nikon for the same price, and while the in-body IS of the Sony was VERY tempting, it just didn't seem nearly as robust as the 20D and I've been known for being rough on EVERYTHING I touch... You can get 20Ds and 30Ds at GREAT prices and Canon has some AWESOME glass... The only caveat I have with Canon is that the Rebel series cameras do NOT fit my hands at all. If I were buying that level of DSLR, I would have gone with Sony or Nikon simply b/c the Rebels are too small and feel wierd in my hands, but thats just me!

My first SLR was a Canon FTBn, followed by an A1, then I acquired some F-1n gear. Always got impeccible results. Gravitated to AF with an EOS-1, then my favorite body of all time, an EOS-3 with eye-controlled focus. I still have it as my lone film camera. The only non-Canon lens I ever shot with any regularity was a Vivitar Series I 28-90. I have always been satisfied with Canon glass, and with the exception of an EF28-135mm, all of my glass is Canon L. I cannot find fault with any Canon product I have owned or used. I am a very sports oriented person and I am always amused at the presence of unmistakable Canon L lenses on the sidelines of sports events I shoot, attend, or watch on TV.

My first SLR was the Canon EOS650 bought in 1987.
This was a change from my faithful Leica IIIg and Rolleiflex. Even though, in many ways, I preferred the Nikon (at the time, the Nikon F was superior and more popular than anything Canon had on offer) I chose the Canon because it had a far quicker and superior auto focus system. With the advent of digital, I stuck with Canon mainly out of habit. |

The thought of moving to digital from film SLR was in 2002, and the main question was: which manufacturer spends more in R&D for their digital line and is evident in their product line? Hands-down, it was Canon.
Yes I would remain with Canon, for the same reason above.. Although, the Nikon D700 is interesting, but not enough. Nikon is still playing catchup, except for their new low-noise sensor. We need to see more innovation like that to be lured ![]() |

In 1985 I decided to give SLR photography a shot, after a scattered history of point & shoots. Got the venerable AE-1 Program, then followed that up with an A-1, and just stuck with Canon in much the same way anyone else does. You've already got the lenses, so you just upgrade the body, and then when it all went to autofocus and then digital, well, it was just easier to stay with Canon.
Canon and Nikon both are great manufacturers. I could have just as easily happened onto a Nikon, but I think back in the day Nikons were more expensive. Definitely more prestigious back then. |

Back in 2003 when I sold my Olympus E20N I looked at both Nikon and Canon. I bought a Nikon D100 and evolved through the D200 and now a D300. Over those years I have gotten some fine Nikkor glass. I have never looked back!
I have a good buddy here in town who shoots Canon and is crazy about his camera. I really don't think you can go wrong with either brand. Cheers, Bill P. |

I bought Canon because....
1. Rebel XT had 1/3 stop greater sensitivity than the ISO displayed. 2. Rebel XT had 2 more megapixels than the competing D70/etc. cameras from Nikon. 3. 50mm f/1.8 II was only about $75 and I needed it for low light action sports shooting. 4. I didn't want to go with a less widely-available name with a more limited selection of accessories, lenses, etc, especially one whose ISO performance was not up to the level of Canon's stuff. I'm still buying Canon now because I already have Canon equipment and changing systems would be too expensive. |

I originally used an F-1 back in the 70s. loved the camera and the quality of Canon lens. When I decided to sell off my film stuff and get back into photography with a digital camera it was an easy decision to stick with Canon.

My folks gave me an AE-1 when I was in art school, I loved it and moved to an EOS 620 for the AF in the early 90's, then I got an A2-e for faster AF. I switched to digital in 2005, before a trip to Italy, when I realized I was going to spend as much money on Velvia and processing as a used 10D would cost. I loved the 10D and later picked up a couple of used 20D's. Still a happy boy.

I like the feel of either Canon or Nikon dSLR in my hands but I don't like the price. Was eyeing on the D300 but compared to the 40D, I found the extra RM2000 was too much for the extra functions.
BTW my first dSLR was a hand-me-down Fujica ST801 and graduated to another hand-me-down Minolta 7000. So I'm one of those 'shoppers' category where I'm not that brand loyal. |

Started with an AE-1p. Only one problem with more than a decade of use, which was fixed for free. With all the accessories and goodies, I married Canon.

Two words: Anna Kournikova
J/K, Been using Canon film SLR's for years and have never had any complaints (well not many) so when I made the switch to digital I only briefly looked at Nikon and moved on with no regrets. RJ R. L. Johnson Photography's photos- powered by SmugMug |

I've been shooting Canon equipment since 1982. I've never had a reason to change manufacturers. I'm very happy with the products they have. My dad bought me my first SLR, a Canon. I've been using them ever since... I bought all three of my kids Canon's to get them started too.
They must be doing something right because they dominate the market place too. The majority of pro's and amateurs a like use Canon's. Jon. |
