I'd be surprised if you got a lot of weather sealing with the 5D. That seems to be one feature that Canon reserves for its 1-series units.

thanks, thats the first I have heard about 'weather sealing'. I was pretty sure canon was going to save that for the 1's. I just started paying attention to this cameras release again, after dropping out after the ten thousandth " when is the 5d replacement coming?" thread. I NEED weathersealing, but I REFUSE to buy a 1 series untill I need all the otherstuff I have to pay for to get it

I just got a quick hands on with the 5D mkII and the weather sealing on the doors, covers and buttons looks just like the sealing on my 40D.

When people say they NEED weathersealing.. what exactly are they going to shoot? If you are going to be in a hurricane i wouldn't trust ANY weathersealing on any brand (including Nikon) and just whack the camera in a rain-protection (or even a underwater housing which can take a bit of a beating aswell .

If its just to keep shooting if it's a light rain, then pretty much all the brands stating weathersealing (Nikon, Canon, etc) handles that. Same goes with splash water btw.

But weathersealing is never waterPROOF on any of the brands. And if they claim they are, i'll gladly take it on my next diving trip to prove them wrong provided they give me a copy to try

And afik the 5D mk2 is supposed to have pretty much the exact level of weathersealing that the 40D and 50D has. Which is just a bit of protection on some bays and connection areas where water might otherwise trickle in.

maybe NEED is a bit strong, but as a designer of tools myself, I have to wonder why canon didn't bother to protect the tool from the environment it was intended for in the first place. They kind of left the cherry off the sundae in my opinion. The 2500Ipaid for my 5d mk.1 would have covered a few o rings, if not, 2600 would have been a fair increase for the ability to shed moisture without fear.

Well, i think the answer is that until Nikon came with weathersealed slapped on a huge advertisement sticker, everyone thought thats what the rain-covers were for

contradictio in terminus ?

...I was in the same boat, and now shoot 1D Mk3 ...

The seals of 40D/50D/5DII are better than nothing, they might even be good, but not good enough for a day in the Dutch drizzle, IMO

Look, been there done that, I've had some of my 1D's under water with flash attached and firing ....

My 1D is used like the military use their Humvees ~ until it breaks ... unlike the Humvee, my 1D survived everything except hard falls, they are designed to 'break away' for easier repair.

SOME of the 1DMKII cameras suffer from curtain misplacement, a known manufacturiung fault ~ I sold both of mine as I developed the 'Nikon Syndrome' ~ as an aside the early Nikon 1D cameras had NO weather sealing at all ~ now that was fun

Rain covers are for the three hours you have to spend in a hurricane with monsoon rain covering a rugby match final somewhere.

Weather sealing means the camera survives the 30 minutes it takes to get off the field and give up on that silly sport ....

weather sealing is for when you set your bag down and walk up and down the sidelines taking pictures with one body till you are exactly 25 yards away from the other body when someone accidently turns on the field irrigation. weather sealing is for when you go to the river to get some predatory bird shots and bring your dogs who get wet and decide to share it with the boss. weathersealing is for when you start out on a hike on a blue sky morning and return on the afternoon that the monsoon season started. I live in the pacific northwest, I NEED weathersealing, I don't want to pay for the top of the line canon to get it. Not until I can justify paying for all the bells and whistles that I just don't need yet.

And 10mm rain for 3 minutes wont cover this?

The 5D mk2 has weather sealing which is stated to the above. Is it as tough as Nikon? I honestly don't know because all i see with nikon's data is "don't operate above 85% humidity".

Most cameras (including those without seals) will handle a little easy splashing and small rain for a short period. If you are absolutely sure that you cant live without the top of the line weatherseal, then its the top of the line for you, Canon or Nikon regardless. But even a top of the line weatherseal can fail if pushed enough.

Personally i have a pretty hefty insurance so if my 5D mk2 would take a swim after i got it, it will be replaced.

And lets settle this once and for all. the 5D mk2 HAS weathersealing, wether or not its ENOUGH weathersealing is up to you to decide.

If you don't want to pay for it, why do you expect to get it? This constantly baffles me. Why would anyone who has regularly seen Canon and Nikon put their best, most desired features on their most expensive cameras expect to see it on a mid-level model?

It's like asking Kia to put Cadillac features into their cars but not increase the price.

this is pointless. You win. I hereby relinquish my rights as a consumer to wish for better products at better prices. Please forgive me, I hope that by seeking out opportunities to spend as much as possible on products sold by companies that no longer need to seek design improvements and compete with one another I can somehow fit into your view of the market reality and how we , as consumers, fit into that reality. What was I thinking?

Ok lets not all get sarcastic here, that never translates well on the internet.

What im just wondering is what you are actually asking for? That 5D mk2 has weathersealing? Because it does. That it has same or better weather sealing than a 1D/1Ds? Well, you do pay a whoooole lot more money for those. But as Brian pointed out that goes for Nikon aswell. They have a different weathersealing between their top of the line models and their "lesser" cousins.

Again though, if perfect weatherproof camera is what you want, NO supplier gives you that.

So what exactly are we arguing in regard to weathersealing here?
