OK, I loved my 20D. Still love in the "honeymoon" phase with it. I've been thinking about putting the push on for a 40D (wife controls the purse strings here). But do I wait for the 50D to come out? I'm not super keen on getting a new camera right now but I don't want to left behind with an obsolete camera. Someone point me in a direction.

Only you can answer. When a new model comes out we all look at the specifications and see what fits. Personally, I rarely put the camera in continuous mode so a 6 frame per second body is no better to me than a 3 fps model. I only shoot RAW so a model with improved Basic mode algorithms means nothing. I lose a lot of shots to poor autofocus so an upgrade in this area might push me toward a purchase more than it would someone who only shoots landscapes with manual lenses. Every camera you buy will be obsolete a day/week/month later so don't worry about it. Don't buy the biggest shoes in the store but look for the ones that fit your feet.

You know Doug, you said it and I thought, Yea!! Thanks. I might get a 50D for Christmas but right now I still love my 20D and I'll be sticking with it. Now if I could only get a flash off of E-Bay...

Just because the 50D is coming out, doesn't mean the 20D takes worse pictures than it did when new. I have the 30D (had the original Rebel before that) and will most likely buy the 50D after all the bugs are worked out. Why? Because most of my shots are high ISO, indoor/night sports and the native ISO 3200 with expansion to 6400 and 12800 and promise of lower noise are right in line with what I shoot. I expect that I will get better IQ with the 50D than the 30D.
To your last question, want and need are definitely not the same. I may want a 1DS MkIII, but I only need a 50D. |

If you itch that bad for a new camera,go for it! I bet you'll be pleased w/your purchase and it may open some new shooting ops!

My D60 still takes excellent pictures even though i've recklessly and brutally abandoned it on a shelf for my 40D
![]() If you need the 50D to improve the type of photography you normally do and the camera you have now doesn't cope with it, then by all means upgrade. If not, you wont take better pictures with a new camera. It will be the same pictures as before, only slightly faster, maybe better dynamic range and resolution =) |

In the realm of technology, there will ALWAYS be something newer and better out there tomorrow. I purchased my 40D back in May and I'm a bit disappointed to hear that the 50D is coming out so soon. That being said, I'm not interested in a 50D right now because the level of improvement *to me* is not enough motivation just yet. Yes, higher resolution seems to be nicer, as does an LCD that can actually show me if my shot is in focus, but I'd also like to have more weather sealing, Nikon's new movie mode sounds cool, etc.
I suspect I'll be keeping my 40D for a few more years and by then, the upgrade will be more significant. __________________
