Default Which Should I Have More?

I currently own the Sigma 10-20, Canon 17-55 f2.8 IS, Canon 70-200 f2.8L IS and the Sigma 70-300 Macro...

Im thinking of selling the 17-55 and buying the Canon 24-70 f2.8L...with the lens hood for the 17-55 there pretty much the same price, give or take a few bucks.

My question is...Am I losing anything by getting rid of the 17-55? I know im gaining 15mm while losing 7mm, but thats a plus cause alltogether im gaining 8mm...LOL!!

Any thoughts would be appreciated

P.S.- I mostly shoot landscape and some weddings/portraits/sports!

Don't have either one, or a Canon anymore, but both lenses get a lot of "love" it seems. Forgetting the Sigma for a moment, YOU need to decide how much YOU shoot between 17mm and 24mm. If it is rare, you got one answer. The Sigma, if optically as good as the 17-55 (less the IS to boot) will cover half that. A gap between 20 and 24 is livable probably, and a lot better than a gap between your current 55 and 70...

I'd probably ditch the Sigma 70-300 too. Use a 1.4 tele instead until you can recoup funds for say a 400mm...?

Thanks Mr. Pickles!!

I think I can live with the sigma being the widest end of my spectrum(10-20)...its not as sharp as the 17-55 but the 24-70 is L glass and thats not to shabby!!

I dont think I want to get rid of the sigma 70-300 because its only worth $150 and its my macro for now!!

Any other thoughts out there?

Which Should I Have More?
...as Mr.Pickles indicated: the answer is simple: which do you shoot more, the 17-24mm or the 55-70mm range ?

I was once in your shoes, 1.6x crop body with 17-40L as WA, 24-70L as GP and 70-200F2.8L IS as tele, looong before EF-S came into existance. The 17-40 was never wide or long enough, the 24-70 was never wide enough, and especially during events/weddings I felt the almost constant urge to switch between 17-40 and 24-70.

When 17-55IS arrived, I bought it as a faster replacement for the 17-40 (that I sold), but found I only used 17-55IS, 24-70 no longer... so I sold 24-70 as well and bought 10-22.

The 'gap' between (17-)55 and 70(-200) is non-existent, IMO, never felt it as a 'lack'.

As 'work' dictated a weather-proof body, I moved up to 1D MkIII, and re-bought 24-70 as GP lens (and a 16-35F2.8II for WA), on the 1.3x crop it has the same feel (~28-~90) as the 17-55IS on the 1.6x crop. I do miss the IS at some moments, but *I* am pleased with the overall better feel/build/sturdiness/weather-proofness, and the larger and heavier 24-70 is easier to hold still/handhold, IMO.

IQ wise I do not see much difference between 17-55IS (on 1.6x) and 24-70 (on 1.3x), 17-55IS is a bit more prone to flare, which diminishes contrast (use that hood! ), and at the wide end the 17-55IS has a bit more pincushion-distortion, easily corrected when shooting RAW in DPP with LensCorrection tools.

...as long as I will have a 1.6x crop body, I will hold on to 10-22 and 17-55IS, as those are really the best lenses to complement *my* style and applications, and of course YMMV wildly

...just *my* €0.02...

Kindest regards!

I have a similar spread with the 24-104 and Tokina 12-24 and find myself often using one or the other at or near the 24mm end with a lot of lens swapping. I would not make the trade unless there was a move to a FF body in the deal. The point was well made that what you shoot is probably different than what we shoot so what bothers me might mean nothing to you. I shoot too much in the 12-40mm range to have a gap and wish I had an overlap lens like the 17-55. My best fit is the 24-xx on FF but no one makes a 15-xx for crop cameras.

On general principles you usually regret selling something that you think gives good images and that you use a lot. If at all possible, I'd add the new lens first and then sell what seems surplus after you see what fits. If the money is just not there, I'd stay with what I have and adapt my shooting to match. Your trade would be 'different' but I'm not convinced it would be 'better'.

Geeeez!!! Thanks everyone for your detail comments!! Now you got me thinking. I might now get rid of the Sigma 10-20, purchase the canon 10-22.

We will see what happens!!
