Default EF 24-105/4.0 L IS USM for weddings?

Hello all!

Up until now I've been shooting weddings mostly with Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8. The settings while shooting indoors is usually 1/100 @ f/2.8.

I have been looking at EF 24-105/4.0 L IS USM, and was wondering how much can I lower my shutter speed at f/4 and IS turned on in order to get similar exposure as to 1/100 @ f2.8? What should be the lowest in order to get all the motion?

f/4 is one stop from f/2.8, so the equivalent exposure is 1/50 sec. IS does nothing to stop subject motion, so unless you're using flash to freeze your subjects I wouldn't go to the f/4 lens unless you can raise your ISO.

Most motion, including sports action, is stopped at 1/500 of a second. For slower things, you can probably do 1/250-1/125 of a second.

Assuming you're staying at the same ISO, you'll need to bump it to 1/50 or slower @f4 for the EXPOSURE to match. At that shutter speed, though, you're going to start seeing motion blur from the subjects. I'm not sure what "get all the motion" means here. Freeze it or show some motion?

The 24-105 is a regular in my bag but I don't use it for low light work. It's a very good lens but f4 isn't when it's at its sharpest (of course, neither is the Tamron at 2.8, which I've also used).

I don't find the IS to have that much of an impact on this lens. Not sure if it's just me, my copy of the lens, or all of them. During low light wedding work, I reach for my 70-200/2.8L IS or a bigger prime.

70 is too much for me, the 24-105 would have been a great span.

By getting all the motion I meant regular people interactions such as talking etc.

I have been shooting with ISO 1600 so no problems there, but if the f/4 is too low with IS in lowlight then I will have to forget this lense.

if it's just people talking, you can get some pretty good stuff at iso 400, 1/15~1/30, with a flash. To pick up ambience of the environment. IS will help a lot, and also F4~5.6

2.8 Can be to shallow for group shots.

Like someone else said; it's in my bag, but I rarely use it. I usually use it outdoors on sunny days for e-shoots or small groups [2-4] more. Not that it couldn't get the job done - it's just that most wedding photogs are going to have much faster glass in the bag. [or on the camera so-to-speak]
