Works OK (on 30D anyway) as a fill flash, unless you want narrow DOF which would require high speed sync. I used it several times on my recent DC trip where I wanted a large DOF anyway. It's handy in a pinch, such as travelling where I didn't want the extra size and weight of the 430EX.

it seems like they're trying to capture back some of the commercial photography market that has been dominated by hasselblads and other medium/large format cameras.

which is 80% a sales thingie and 20% an actual useful feature.

and without going into much technical discussion (there is a link to an excellent lecture on sensorsizes vs pixeldensity for those interested here: Demystifying Digital Camera Specifications) the summary is, more pixeldensity (MP) on a small sensor size is not all nice and well.

So even if the files become bigger, you are talking about two different horses when it comes to the clarity, dynamic range and detail that you will capture between a medium format system and a small format system.

And for those of you who are old enough to remember the ancient times when we used film, the exact same discussion were rampant back then aswell, discussing if extremely low iso film on a small format could compare to a medium format The answer was no back then aswell.

From the tease image of the future 5D replacement in the Canon website it appears to have a pop-up flash.

I read a rumour that Canon will release two new DSLR's - a 'tweener' 7D and a 3D. Makes sense to me - a cheaper '5D' to compete against the D700, and the 3D wedged between it and the very expensive 1Ds III, maybe as a direct competitor to the Nikon D3. I take all these rumours with large grains of salt, but I think this one may have legs.

no, not yet, but your friendly Mod *does* have an invitation to the Dutch Canon Circus tomorrow/today September 17th, so if anything materializes there from The Dark Side Of The Moon (great loss: Ricky Wright is gone! 65...), be sure I will report back in about 24 hours, if possible with images ...

...just to keep you posted, and so that you stay tuned I know how to *tease* too ...
