Hi Everyone, I'm looking to jump into a DSLR I've always owned Canon 35's
so that's probably what I'm going for. The problem is I don't want to spend a lot of cash on it, it's just for kicks so I want to start with the Body only and use the lens from my old EOS Elan 7 I also have a killer flash but it's a TTL not a ETTL (540EZ) from what I understand it will work but with limited function. Can anyone tell me how limited from real life personal experience? I've found a few great deals on a D10 6.3MP and a XT D350 8MP one thing I really like about the D10 is the feel, It feels like a real pro 35mm a nice plus in my book. on the D350 I think it has an updated CMOS(sp) plus the extra 1.7MP and it said to be much faster then the D10. the speed is a very big plus but the body feels a little cheap. anyone have any real life personal experience with the D10 VS D350 they can share? Thanks for your help, Ron __________________

well my first DSLR was the predecessor of the 10D, called D60 which was a beauty to play with and i never upgraded it until i got the 40D (yes, that is quite a leap
![]() Both will take very good pictures. And the 2 MP difference wont do much. But if you are looking at bargains why not see if you can't pick up a 20D or 30D? the 20D's is very cheap today aswell and is a much better camera than both the 10D and 350D combined. Imho, if you are used to sturdier cameras, you will not be happy with the XXX series. God knows i prefere my 40D over my 450D any day of the week ![]() |

Hi Hubba, Thanks for the advice, I was looking into the 20 and 30 but I'm really trying to keep this around $300USD for my first DSLR Body. the only lens I have left that will work is a Tokina AT-X 24-200 3.5-5.6 and knowing me I'm going to want another lens or two or...
Keeping that in mind I found a few 10D's for just about 300+- with the grip I only found one 20D without the grip for the same price but missed it by an hour ![]() At this point I just what to toss my P&S I've never owned one until digital came along and still I keep buying them.. I was going to spend the cash on yet another one and thought it would be better spent on a older DSLR |

, if you are used to ELAN7 series, the feature set of 300D will feel too limited, and speed of both 10D and 300D/350D will be disappointing. As Hubba suggested: save up for a used 20D/30D, & save some more for the 18-55IS kitlens to get you started. Please note the Tokina AT-X 24-200 might disappoint you to pieces... ...0.02... Kindest regards! Max@Home |

Max thank you, That information on my 540 was very helpful..
After reading that I also found the manuals for the 10 and the 20. The 20D seems like a great camera but I'm not sure if I can pass this 10D up The guy just emailed me and he will take the $300 offer I made. The camera is like new and comes with the battery grip and well as a few spare batteries. At that price buying a new lens or two wont feel so bad plus if I like this digital thing I can always look into a 40D next year and use the 10 for whatever.. I never seem to want to sell off my gear, I still have my AL-1 (my first canon) my A-1 and about 5 FD lenses including a 50 1.4 I even have a Yashca AF-230 that I called my P&S way back when. My last attempt to get back into the hobby I bought the Elan7 and only shot 3 to 5 rolls with it ![]() |

Well i'd say go for it then. The 10D will be a nice camera to have until you get a 40D =)
Sure a 20D, 30D would be a better camera, but if the price tag on the 10D works better and you may get some lens to go with it, its better to get started. And ofcourse, put your investments in the lenses rather than the camera. Good lenses on the 10D will usually be good lenses on the 40D. |

That is a great point! My head is still thinking film and didn't think the x1.6 would be an issue. one thing I wanted was the grip and lost sight of some of the other benefits the 20D or better would do for me.. my main focus was photo quality other then that I didn't care if it was as basic as a A-1 I guess that's why I was jumping on the 10D so fast but I kind of knew in the back of my mind the xxx series was not the camera I should buy but it was the one that started me on the quest.
Thanks for all the input just don't get frustrated with me IF I come back with a 10D if the price it really right. |

Doh, forgot about 3rd party. Tamron 17-50 f/2.8 is a good one too, though not what I would consider ultra wide. I was thinking of the 10-20 range, which do also have 3rd party versions that will work.

While this combination is a tad more than twice the stated price of the 10D you might want to consider a Refurbished 30D from Adoroma. 1234B076 Canon EOS-30D Digital SLR Camera Body Kit with 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 Lens - Refurbished by Canon U.S.A.The included 18-55 lens is not the new IS version and has been widely paned but it is also only $10 more than just the refurbished body. 1234B075AA Canon EOS-30D Digital SLR Camera Body, 8.2 Megapixels, Interchangeable Lens Camera - Refurbished by Canon U.S.A.

MAN! Sometimes life BITES! I was getting in the mood to buy a good DSLR and I was playing with my Elan 7 Then I opened the window took a few shots went to zoom in on something and BAM! the lens fell right out of my hands 2 floors down on to the A/C unit. Needless to say the lens is shot the fall knocked the mount about a 3/16th of an inch in and the zoom, focus rings don't turn. I think I'm going to get stuck buying a 300 or 350 just to get my fix. My plan was to use this lens until I decide on what I'm going to do with this camera... I guess it's still better then a point and shoot..

"stuck"? I wouldn't quite say that. I have a XT/350D/Kiss n, loved it so much I bought another one so I can give my wife the new one and get myself my 1D3. LOL IQ wise, I can barely notice a difference between pictures I've taken with my 30D and the XT. Now, the 10D as this post originated, I can tell a difference in IQ, that's with the 20D v. 10D.

The 300D takes great photos, though the 350D is a lot faster and has a larger buffer, both of which I disliked greatly on my 300D.

Thanks for the peep talk on the 300/350. I did have my heart set on a semi pro model aside from a K1000 that's all I ever bought camera wise.
The only thing that I really dislike about the 300/350 is the plastic body and the fact that it's stamped "Rebel" if it was a 35mm I wouldn't even conceder it. However I am looking at the plus side...one thing it will allow me to do is buy a EF-S lens or two. |

I do like the thumb wheel on the semi pro bodies better than the cursors on the Rebel series. You might try one out with the settings you use a lot to see how the handling is. For FEC, for example, you press a button, then turn the thumb wheel to adjust. The 300D doesn't have FEC and the other Rebels you have to go through the menu to adjust, if I remember correctly. I think the ISO settings may be the same way. So, you need to look at the hassle factor when comparing bodies.

BTW, What do you all think of the Nikon D70 or something on that line? years ago I had a Nikon phase and bought a 8008 and a FM(?) I wanted the F4s but it was 3x the price.. anyway I found a Nikon AF 35~70/Macro it took a great shot with the 8008 but it hasn't been used in years. I figure I would add a better 18~55 to it plus one or two non-zoom lenses. |

I don't know much about Nikon, but they had ccd sensors up until the D300, which has a cmos sensor like the Canon. The cmos is supposed to be better for high ISO noise, but again, I have no experience with Nikon (not since my Nikon EM film camera, anyway).
