Default BP-511 VS BP-511A

I am ready to purchase a Canon 40D and would like to purchase (if needed) additional batteries. I now have a Canon EOS Digital Rebel/300D with several BP-511 batteries. I see the BP-511A is specified for the 40D. Are the BP-511 and BP-511A interchangable?

It would be nice to carry only one type of battery when using both cameras.

Thanks, for any information.
Bill

For the most part they are the same battery. The capacity is a little different. The BP-511 is a 1100 mah battery and the BP-511a is a 1390 mah. For my 30D, I use 1800 mah Non-Canon brand which has been working great for over a year now.

Yes, they are interchangeable. The lower the mah, the shorter the battery will last, so the 511 will work but not last as long as the 511A.

290mAh may not make that much of difference, though.

Hi Guys,

I just obtained a 7.3 volt lithium battery for a "Canon Video Camera" labeled BP511. The site said it was good for Canon 5D cameras. My "Official" battery is a BP511A and is a 7.4 volt.

Do you think this is any kind of problem? The difference in price was staggering.

I find standard batteries to be $65-$100 and these "other sites" batteries to be about $28.00. This one only cost $6.00, out the door, but it was on special.

It comes from a distributor in Arcadia Calif, but the box clearly shows it as a Chinese product. I have bought "Hong Kong" flash cables and devices and they have worked fine so I am inclined to believe this one will be fine..

I will check it with my meter once it is charged and then see how long it lasts.

Several Canon video cameras use the same battery as the DSLR's, so if it is BP511, it should work without problems.

I am from Hong Kong and I doubt whether there is any product ACTUALLY was manufactured in Hong Kong.

I have no issue with products coming from China AS SUCH as most of the products (or the major components of which) are from China. However, brandname products do give you certain degree of confidence in the product itself.

Cheers

I don't doubt it, as long as labor is cheap, it will be manufactured there. In the 70's it was Japan, in the 80's and 90's it was HK, now it is China.

"I use 1800 mah Non-Canon brand"

I purchased Duracells, 7.4V, 1400MAH, which I've been pleased with. Where did you find the 1800MAH batteries?

I have several BP511A's chinese made for a great price and all but 1 have worked well for over a year now, considering they are a 1/4 of the price of original Canon bats I'm happy....
