Default Canon EOS 40D Question

Hello, I've noticed that there seems to be alot of rebates on this camera. Is Canon coming out with a 12 meg camera? Like a 50D? (not the XSI rebel).
Our should I wait?
Thanks

Jerry

Actually, it was introduced in August, not November. I got mine shortly after September 1st.

Regardless, Canon will ALWAYS be coming out with something new right after you buy something. The 40D is a great camera now and will still be a great camera when something new comes out.

The cycle for 10D/20D/30D/40D has been about 18 months long. Look for the 50D in early-mid-2009.

Or sooner, depending on how badly Canon wants your money again. I think the 5D2 and maybe an updated 1D will be in the works prior to a 50D.

Thank you for everybody's input. I'm still confused if I should get a 40D or wait for a 50D?

Simple solution buy both, the 40D now then you can upgrade when the 50D or whatever it is called when it is introduced.

What are you going to shoot? If sports or BIF, then the high frame rate of the 40D is great. Frankly speaking the Xsi is also a lot of camera for the money. Either one gives you a nice set of features that your 20D doesn't have: larger LCD, dust removal (which really works for me), Digic III 14-bit processing, no more 100 shot per folder limit, better AF, and more.

Do you want to shoot now or wait another year? Assuming an 18 month product cycle and the release last year, you're looking at Feb/March of 2009 before a 50D is announced. And then it takes time to hit distribution.

Remember: the 20D to 30D upgrade really wasn't that big of a deal. Many of us 20D owners didn't bother with it. And here's the fun part: the 20D STILL takes the same picture it did when it was the new thing. You're not losing anything when a new camera comes out.

IMHO, Given that there's nothing "wrong" with the 40D, and the "50D" is not yet anything other than wishful thinking, there's nothing to be gained by NOT buying a 40D.

As the local IT "guru", I am frequently asked advice on what computer to buy. I invariably give my suggestion, and then the questioner goes "opinion shopping". Very often they return to me saying they have been told that some of my recommendations may be superseded "soon".

Well...Yes......But by that logic I'd still be running my Commodore 64 with a tape drive........

Everything tech will be superseded sooner or later, a good buy today will still be a good purchase tomorrow.

If you wait another 12 months for the "50D" release, then another couple of months for its availability, you'll only be 12 months from the 60D announcement, and since you've already gone and waited 18 months, what's another 12 months ? Of course, there's always the 70D, should be here early 2010 !!!

(After 5 years you'll upgrade the camera, but keep the lenses, flashes and rest of your kit .....)
