Remembered one that, while minor, find to be really useful. C.Fn IV-5

The default for M is to use the top dial for shutter and the back wheel for aperture. What this function does is reverse them. I suspect most people use Av as the primary setting so this C.Fn makes M natural.

OK.

My 1D Mk III is setup like this: Custom Functions:

CFn I-3: ISO range enabled

I enable L (50) to H (6400), but I also use Highlight Tone Priority, to get to L and H I first have to switch HTP off (therefor HTP is in MyMenu )

CFn I-7: Spot metering linked to active AF point

CFn I-8: Safety shift enabled (Tv/Av)

CFn I-9: Registered usable shooting modes enabled

- since I only use Av, Tv, M, P, I switched off Bulb

CFn II-3: Highlight tone priority: ON

...see above Cfn 1-3

CFn II-9: INFO button displays shooting functions when shooting

CFn III-2: AI Servo tracking sensitivity: slow (-1)

...from the TechTips of Mr. Chuck Westfall

CFn III-4: AI Servo continuous AF track priority

CFn III-12: AF point display during focus: ON when focus achieved

CFn III-13: AF point brightness: brighter

CFn III-16: Registered continuous shooting speed enabled

H=8, L=3

CFn III-17: Registered continuous shooting shot count limit enabled

..and maximal 25 of them (if RAW+JPG-Small-Fine allows)

CFn IV-4: SET button when shooting: Image playback

...replay under your thumb/right hand, no need to switch to left hand, really useful IMO, also set this up on my 20D & 40D

CFn IV-8: WB + media/image size displayed on LCD monitor

CFn IV-11: Focusing screen: Ec-A, B, C, CII, CIII, D, H, I, L

I use the Ec-D (with the lines on it, really a cool aide when you have to shoot 'level')

CFn IV-16: Simulate exposure during Live View shooting

...so the LCD shows (or tries to) 'what-you-get'

...€0.02...

Kindest regards!

...a nice one I think for *new* Canon users: if you have been shooting 10D/20D/30D/40D/5D (with 'big-wheel-on-back'), you might be already so used to it, that reversing them is 'un-natural' (it was in my case, I tried Cfn IV-5, but couldn't get used to it anymore , I guess 4 1/2 years 10D/20D/40D made the un-natural natural )

...but for 'new' Canon-'backwheelers', this might be good

That's very cool, Max.

Have a question to you about "CFn I-7: Spot metering linked to active AF point".

Been thinking about that even before getting the camera and still undecided. So I wonder how you like this setting (obviously you like it otherwise you won't use it), but still would be nice to hear your opinion. Also, what is your default exposure mode.

OK, last question if Spot is not linked to active AF point, do you think for the 1 series, the link to exposure is stronger than say 40D or 5D.

Sorry for the many question

Really disliked how manual works in the other cameras, and always fumble with M (maybe because I don't use M much).

My default shooting mode is Av, and I prefer to meter either Spot or Partial, with Partial and the (*) button I meter and lock exposure on the desired area, and if I have a difficult scene or lack that time, I use Spot and select the best AF point (mostly eyes/faces) that I also want to expose for. I like the setting a lot , as I can now meter and AF in one go, otherwise it would have been spot (center camera) on eye/face, meter and lock with (*) button, then select proper AF point, re-compose and AF and shoot, now it is one half-shutter press only to both AF and meter on the place I want

If you mean the influence of the spotmeter, then yes, it 'spots' better than my 40D, even unlinked, couldn't tell for 5D as I have too little experience with that body, but since 5D is mainly 20D technology, I would suggest a yes, 1D3 'spots' better than 5D, too

...hope this helps, *my* €0.02...

Thanks.

What I meant was, for 20/30/40/5D there is a bias in exposure to the non-center point when using Evaluative for example (at least that's what you guys said). Is that bias stronger in the 1 series compared to these cameras.

This info helps decide to use "Spot metering linked to active AF point" or not.

SanDisk Extreme III 30MB/s edition SD Card introduced

Tempting, depending on price. Still waiting for 16GB CF Extreme III 30MB/s to drop in price.

Just a curiosity, but what is the average Large/Fine jpeg file size on the 1DsMlll? (At ISO 100) I have a 5D and 30D which I intend to get more use out of,but my next purchase will likely be the 1DsMlll or its successor.I like the portability and they can still make quality 40x60's if necessary.I would shoot raw for something that large, though.

Only shot Jpeg once but can't remember which size was it (I think M2). Also the files are scattered in different HDs so can't even average that size for you.

Anyway, according to the manual, the best quality jpeg will be around 21 MB.

Edit: Forgot to ask. Can you clarify what you meant by portability. The 1D series is quite bigger and heavier than the cameras you mentioned (which a positive for me). I really like the size and weight of the 1D series.

For the price one might consider medium format. That could bring further limitation when doing outdoor location work.By comparison, the 35mm digital will provide better portability and still create remarkable images. That was part of my consideration. Thanks for your reply.
