...just did & tested the Direct Selection of AF points: for *me* this is a blessing!

...it takes away my one and only 'operational niggle' I had with the 1-D MkIII, AF selection with the main and back controllers never felt intuitive , very hard to become *my* 'second nature' , the direct selection is soo much more 'natural' ...

...€0.02...

Kindest regards!

Both co-exist, I find it great, especially as I've the 5D since Monday, now both can AF select the same way.

Strangely, despite I hating the way the MKIII focussed [select], I actually find it more useful to employ ** sometimes *** but don't take that joystick away ~ focus any which way now, great ~ the old method is still needed for the vertical ~ one might change hand position and shoot with the elbow sticking up in the air ~~~ to be able to reach the joystick ~~

Default Re: EOS-1D Mark III and EOS 1-Ds Mark III FIRMWARE UPGRADES

All kidding, fun and pun aside:

My first impressions of the new Firmware UPGRADE (new features, so a bit more more than an UPDATE ) so far:

The new functions are extremely useful, the joystick-selectable AF points was the only real niggle I had with operating my 1-D MkIII, and I was one of the customers that emailed Canon about that after intensively testing a 1-D MkIII , even before I actually bought mine, Kudos again to Canon for listening ...

Being able to select AF points with the wheel while shooting in portrait orientation, and still be able to swiftly access EC while in Av or Tv is another real winner for *me*...

And finally: the AF adjustments: as I mentioned before, ServoAF is my least used AF method, but after the Firmware Upgrade it feels a LOT more steady: this afternoon I tested ServoAF w/the 100-400 and center AF point selected on my usual targets: airplanes flying by en-route to our countries Main Airport (my village is just between two landing 'legs' and we see them come by relatively low and slow .

Performance was noticeably better than before: fast acquisition, and no hunting afterwards, no glitches from the subject and re-acquisitions.

I shot about 90 frames in series of 6 to 15, and apart from some of the first they were all well in-focus.

...so far, so good: other initial test reports I have read on DPReview indicate a similar improved behavior experienced by many other users

...but the report of the 1-D MkIII's 'hardest juror and most intense tester', mr. Rob Galbraith, is still not there, wonder what he will conclude ...

...for now, *my* €0.02...

Kindest regards!

I'm playing with my new 5D [well it was that or a Nikon sic ***] so my MKIII has not been the front camera as it has been.

But yesterday, during the Irish president's visit I got a lovely portrait of her with the 1DMKIII and the recently serviced 70~200mm L

It's a simply enough shot but I post it as representative of what I'd have expected from a 1DMKIII but was sadly eluding me in all areas, exposure, focus sharpness.

What's more remarkable is it's just the first shot in a sequence, all are useful except from expression point of view. Previously I'd have a couple of dozen of these shots ~ hoping against hope I'd have a technically competent example. I hope it's not a fluke and I can start relying on my 1DMKIII again.

i am always curious when reading posts with 1d mark 3 in it, the consistancy issue ?? i havent had a problem with my 1 d mark 3 at all i would agree with max @ home that the firmware is an improvement. I wasnt one of the first to get the 1 d mark 3 but purchased after a few months. will give it a more thorough test at scone palace ( international cross country) tommorow.
