Default To 5D or not 5D

I have a 20D and am Ok with it. Got some great Pics to show. But would love a full frame camera. I have been looking at the 5D but would love to have the Digic III procesor and sensor cleaning and faster shutter speed. I don't think I want the 40D. I am not paid to take pics so can't "Justify" spending $8K for a body. ( though I would love to). Is there a new 5D coming out or the next thing would be the Eos 1 series?

Anyone with secret info?

Ask yourself what aspects of the 5D are limiting (or appear to be limiting) your photography? If the list isn't satisfactory, then forget upgrading the body and sink the money into good glass or something else, such as lighting.

...nothing too secret about the Canon model strategy, using plain common sense and watching the timeline, we can see the PhotoKina, world's largest bi-annual camera fair, coming up next September in Köln, Germany.

Last time, DiGiC III was introduced:

(shot with a 20D, BTW )

...so *I* wouldn't be surprised if they showed a DiGiC IV, and put that in an all-new body with the FF CMOS sensor of the EOS 1Ds MarkII, ~15.5MP, with re-worked algorithms and microlenses etc..., to create a 'semi-pro' ~$/€ 2.750 EOS 5DMkII/7D with very clean HighISO up to 6400 native, H-12800, ~4 FPS and a ~12 RAW images deep buffer, all-new AF system, partially 'weather sealed/environment protected', EOS Sensor cleaning system, LiveView with an improved (over 450D...) ContrastDetect AF, etc, usw...

...when and what exactly, only Canon knows ...but who looks into the history, can make very decent 'educated guesses'

With all that said, the 5D is at an almost Historic All-time Low in Price at the moment, if you shop wise, you pay ~$1600 or less for a new body (after 'Canon CashBack'), less than half of the official introduction price of $3299 , so if you *do* want one, *now* seems the moment, when Cashback ends, and the '5D MkII/7D' arrives, prices for a *new* 5D will probably not get much lower than ~$1600 before supply dries up...

...and remember: just *my* €0.02 worth of extrapolation, wishful thinking and common sense, so I could be totally wrong ...

Anyway, you have my kindest regards!

The 5D takes great pictures. I would not get one now, however. Also, as a matter of principle, I would not encourage Canon to continue offering their pain-in-the-butt rebates or "cash backs" by buying anything on which such a rebate is offered.

I was going to get the 5D as my back-up camera
but i did chance my mint after i took it for a test drive
You see lots of canon guys love the camera, but my experience was not that good
I'm waiting for the new 5D or 7D to come out
Nobody knows when, but i know it coming
For now i use my 40D as a back-up camera and i don't have anything bad to say about the camera ,or the $$ i have spent
Then if i was you just wait for a litle longer
One more think if you buy the 5D now , you will loose Lot's of money within 5-6 months
then why you want to buy a old Camera were the new one is coming soon

5D is a great camera and the full frame is great to have love it for portraits, product shots and macro. i agree with Epphoto you would of course loose money if you came to sell it which is obvious. The cameras price fluctuates not the quality a great camera.
Another given Canon will always bring out something newer, faster etc etc.
Its comes down to how much you want to spend.

Even if a new 5D comes out I don't think you would lose a whole lot of money because the new camera will probably be priced slightly lower than (but close to) a 1D MkIII. So you are probably looking at a price tag of between £1500 and £2000!

This is currently double the price of a 5D. I don't see the 5D losing much if the new camera comes out. It will continue to fall for sure but not by a lot as the new camera will maintain its igh price for quite some time before it starts to fall away.

My 2 cents coming from a rebel xt and a 20d is that the 5d is fantastic. I looked through the viewfinder on the 5d and fell in love. I have had some dust on my sensor a couple times. And have used the totally unapproved method of shooting some store bought compressed air in there to clean it off. Whatever. Its no big deal.

I bought the camera because of a couple things:
#1 It was in my price range for a full frame sensor
#2 I love to shoot at night, and with a tiny viewfinder its hard to focus shots manually
#3 Coming from the pro-sumer to a pro-ish (i like to think of it as a pro camera but some disagree) camera it was amazing for me.

Basically I have nothing but love for this camera. It has renewed my interest in photography and was exactly what i could afford, and wanted from a camera.

I just picked one up in the kit (with the 24-105mm f/4 L IS) - piggybacked on a friends purchase and got the "Double Rebate"... $3100 - $400. Great price - especially considering the lens retails for over $1200. That's effectively $1500 for the body.

Thanks!

Love the camera. I had to sell off my 30D and XTi (and EF-S lenses) - prevented the house from being a murder scene.

Controls very familiar to the 30D but feel is superior - Tough to say why as it's very similar size to the 30D.

The sensor, SD, the sensor

You will love the 5D. When I got mine I was blown away, after using 20D.

Hello folks, I am new here but not to picture taking and I refer to it that way because I am in no way a photographer. In response to your 5D question I have been through numerous digital cameras including my last two a Canon Rebel and a 20D. What I have found is that I have never been completely happy with any of the results. Even with L lenses I was still not satisfied.

I recently purchased a Canon 5D and all I can say is wow! I can truly say I have found my camera. I look at my prints and for me I am amazed, please keep in mind that is for a picture taker and not a photographer. In no way would I compare anything I have done to some of the professional samples I have seen here.

Having said that many here and in other forums have said that equipment will not make you a photographer and that is very true but the 5D has made me a better picture taker. Here are a couple of samples of what the camera can do, just think if it was in the hands of someone who knew what they were doing.
